[Imp!] XP Hotfix for Dual Core Processor users

Hi Frenz,

I dont know if this issue has been addressed in any of the threads before. But I just thought that I’d put in my 2 cents…

Anyways the laptops (and possibly PC’s) that run XP using a core2Duo or equivalent dual core processors will experience a significant decrease in performance if they have not installed a particular patch from Microsoft. It is a hotfix which is mandatory if u are a gamer and like all the eye-candy like me. For general PC users-you are not going to find much (or any) performance difference. But for the you hardcore gamers this hotfix can improve ur FPS a lot and improve gaming performance.

***From Microsoft

“SYMPTOMS
Computers that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features, such as Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) processor performance states, require Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additional updates are available to optimize performance and behavior on computers that are running Windows XP SP2. Without these updates, computers that are equipped with these power management-capable, mobile, dual-core processors may experience decreased performance or unexpected behavior.” ***

I believe that this hotfix is aimed directly at those using laptops. You can get more information on this hotfix directly from Microsoft support…

Computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features may experience decreased performance

*After you install the hotfix that is described in this article, you may use registry settings to disable the new performance state policy behavior. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, point to New, and then click Key.
3. Type Throttle for the new key name.
4. Right-click Throttle, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type PerfEnablePackageIdle for the value name.
6. Right-click PerfEnablePackageIdle, and then click Modify.
7. In the Value data box, type 0. Make sure that Hexadecimal is selected in the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, and then click OK.

Note You can type 1 in the Value data box to enable the new performance state policy behavior.
8. Quit Registry Editor. *

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system

download the hotfix from the linf and install it …Enjoy!!!

I’m running a T7200 @ 2.00Ghz on my Sony Vaio.

HAs anyone else used this ? Assuming its directly from MS, it shudn’t create any problems but I would like to confirm once before I install it.

Also, what does “registry settings to disable the new performance state policy behavior” mean ?

Binoy, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

Hi…This is an issue that is addressed widely in forums such as notebookreview.com …I frequent it a lot so I found this…if u go there you will get indepth analysis and the difference before and after the hotfix…

I really dont have anytime to add statistics but thought that it’d be great that you alll came to know abt this…is is an update that does not get installed automatically thorugh the Automatic Update of Microsoft support.

Dont just ignore it…but thats ur choice…

if u have automatic updates turned on, the patch should have been installed by now! just check for that update in the add remove settings in xp!

Hi 6pack..

This patch is not installed through automatic update…You will have to get it from Microsoft support…

The ‘AMD dual core optimiser’ and the Windows hot fix were recommended for amd dual core rigs on XS and there is a huge thread about it with details in the first post there.

The latest is version 4.0. … and can be downloaded fro the Windows site after valiadtion.

The thread on XS has the link to download te older 3.x.y. … - provided by the OP. :face_with_tongue:
How to install the AMD X2 drivers, hotfix, the correct way. - XtremeSystems Forums

I am not sure if C2D users need that but i haven’t vetured into the intel section there.

^ this is sooooooooo old guys.

If you bought the mobo recently, probably the hotfix is installed silently with the mobo drivers. Mine is.

Check your boot.ini for the switch

/noexecute=optin /usepmtimer

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

well it might be old…but just check it out…

Anyways I downloaded the hotfix from my office…the 4.0 version…haha…validated the XP in my office (which obviously is an authentic one)…
