India orders phone companies to install govt cyber safety app in every phone, users will not be able to delete it

Will that help ?

How about getting from EU ?

Do EU phones work fine here ?

what if the updates sent will be geo specific?, so you get the malware as a part of all updates and depending on the location you are at, they infect your device?

Didn’t EU also pass some sort of resolution to allow the govt agencies to read the chat texts or something?

Maybe I’m being hyper-aware but its so odd seeing this sudden and quick push towards mass surveillance at this scale and speed.

Not so difficult to read is it

The government said the app was essential to combat ā€œserious endangermentā€ of telecom cyber security from duplicate or spoofed IMEI numbers, which enable scams and network misuse.

The government app allows users to report suspicious calls, verify IMEIs and block stolen devices through a central registry.

With more than 5 million downloads since its launch, the app has helped block more than 3.7 million stolen or lost mobile phones, while more than 30 million fraudulent connections have also been terminated.

The government says it helps prevent cyber threats and assists tracking and blocking of lost or stolen phones, helping police to trace devices, while keeping counterfeits out of the black market.

People have already downloaded this app for their own security.

Once a phone is reported as stolen by the owner as stolen the IMEI is automatically blacklisted by telcos or if not tracked by the vendor to help locate the stolen phone.

Best phone to commit crime with is a stolen phone. So this is an attempt by government to reduce the pool of such phones.

What I don’t understand is why is an app required for this in the first place and two why it has to be compulsory installed on all phones.

Whatever happened to good old Israeli agencies? Why is the Indian government not using their spyware services anymore?

Turns out I’ve already installed it. Can’t remember why. Must have been somebody here who recommended it :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I think it was for checking what SIMs you have registered on your name. I had it installed for same reason.

Yes, that way no crime can be committed under your name. To report stolen phones

Also to check if 2nd hand phone you want to buy was reported as stolen or not. Course you would still be screwed if it was reported a week later after you bought it

too expensive not enough hafta

This will have backlash.

If you talking about Pegasus..it is
INR 2 crore per use btw.

We are 150 crore .
Do the maths.

Pegasus was used for Rahul baba ..woh bhi waste hi tha.

Everyday our babudom wakeup with a fresh wet dream of how can we show the people who’s their daddy!! :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:

I like the app but totally hate uninstallable govt mandated app…. this is a tame app but the move is directionally very hazardous.

The primary issue is that every phone isnt rooted. Solve that. It solves everything.
One wont accept that on a computer so why should one accept that on a phone?

What can we do?
People especially here who have deep expertise in rooting phones should offer / sell their services to others here. Problem solved.

Good thing I’m using an old phone which has no updates left.

The fact that they waited till the current CJI was sworn in. LOL no stopping this now.

Sad thing is, large part of the userbase will defend it. We are incredibly servile to authority.

biggest hurdle with rooting has always been banking/upi apps refusing to work. Quite frustrating, in the pre-upi days, rooting was one of the first things I used to do when I got a phone.

When a phone is rooted it’s possible to selectively present different views of the system to different apps. I believe this is available on lineageos with respect to SafetyNet APIs.

Lineageos also allows rooting & unrooting. Though it may be a bit too much for using banking apps.

Also those banking apps can be just used in the browser. So it’s not a big problem.

And perhaps a VM for UPI?

everytime i see shit like this i feel what power can do and what we are doing with it.

They think scams will get reduced by doing this

If this app is so successful without being mandatory then why require it

Imagine if it got hacked then every phone with it becomes vulnerable. Who needs pegasus :smiling_face_with_horns:
