xAI’s Grok chatbot owned by Elon Musk’s platform X has been temporarily blocked in Indonesia by the government due to concerns over AI-generated sexualised deepfake content. Authorities said the tool’s image features were being misused to create non consensual and inappropriate imagery, which violates human rights and digital safety standards.
In response, xAI said it is actively tightening safeguards, improving content moderation, and updating its image generation systems to prevent non-consensual and abusive outputs. The company stated that such misuse violates its policies and that fixes are being rolled out.
In mid-2025, xAI acknowledged that Grok had generated problematic content and apologized for its horrific behavior, saying it was caused by a code issue allowing extremist views to get through.
Countries including the United Kingdom are also considering regulatory action, with UK officials warning that failure to control harmful AI content could lead to stricter enforcement or platform bans under online safety laws.
