Looking for a replacement for an ageing Android tablet for my mom.
Requirements are browsing and youtube mainly.
Ipad 9 Gen is available on flipkart for around 18.5K currently (20K minus bank discounts).
Is it still a good buy or there are better tablets in this price range for her requirements (browsing and youtube)?
Yes it will still receive major OS updates upto around 2025-26, And android tabs have been never able to compete ipad
Oh yes if you are buying it for your mom who would be using it mainly for general apps like youtube and web browsing then it is absolutely great and will last a long long time. Up until I September I was using ipad Air 2, it was 7-8 years old and still going great.
It did not get newer iOS major releases after a point but there was no lag during day to day activities. The only reason I replaced it because it was 16GB and I could not even install the security updates without deleting half the apps on it.
The software and hardware should be able to handle basic needs pretty smoothly. Only issue is the display - it’s Retina IPS, which is kind of a bummer is 2024. Check it out once in a physical store, if you’re okay with it then go ahead.
Please note that if you don’t have another Apple device, the lightning connector can be a damn pain, especially since most apples now have also moved to USB C. I would strongly ask you to consider this since charging the device and taking it around can be a pain if you don’t have the cable with you.
Also most newer tablets have a better screen and speakers. As for software updates, outside the iPads and top level Sammy Tablets, you are out of luck.
Also if you wish to install modded apps, and sideload stuff, nothing like Android 
It will be fine for next 2-3 years but after that it is going to be a struggle. Usually tablets are kept longer than mobile phones.
for youtube and browsing chipset is very capable and ios is very much optimised. only downside is the screen, if user is fine with screen then for 17-18000 for 64gb it is very good.
For web browsing and Casual usage, 9th gen still makes sense.
