Laptop scrolling by itself

Dear forum members my laptop Lenovo V330, running on Windows 11, is showing a peculiar behaviour since last month. The screen starts to scroll all by itself as if some demonic forces have taken control of it. It doesn’t have any external/3rd party applications installed. I have tried various solutions mentioned below to sort out the issue but it still persists. My last resort is approaching the skilled members of this forum for help & suggestions.

  1. Checked all the keyboard keys for proper working or if any is stuck.
  2. Used a blower to blow away / dislodge any dust particles etc stuck between the keys.
  3. Used an external keyboard
  4. Formatted and re-installed Windows 10 & Windows 11.
  5. Have uninstalled MS Office so no software application is installed.
  6. Even uninstalled the last Windows update.

Laptop configuration is

CPU: Intel Core i5 8250U

SSD: 256 GB

RAM: 12 GB

Mouse issue. First disconnect any external mice bt/2.4/usb and check.

If not solved then go to device manager - Mouse - Uninstall.

It’ll be Auto reinstalled anyway but you can test if autoscrolling has stopped and proceed from there

No external mouse or monitor is installed. Still on your advice I will uninstall the in-built mouse from the Device Manger. Attaching screenshot of the same.

I’ve fixed this issue on someone’s laptop before. It was due to one of mouse or keyboard drivers.

I found the solution on reddit but don’t remember which. Look up auto scroll issue reddit

As per your advice I have uninstalled the internal mouse’s drivers and connected an external mouse. Let’s wait and watch

Physically disconnect the track point if it has one.

Possibly mother issue, check mother board.

Not working. Automatic scrolling still going on.

How do I check?

“man my car’s AC isn’t working”
”hmm did you check your car?”

Try to boot from linux cd ( No need to install). See if problem happens here too.

If yes, then its hardware issue most likely. Else software.

Since you reinstalled windows, it seems like hardware, but this will confirm it.

I know someone who’s laptop truly was haunted. It used to power on on its own, open specific files and scroll to random lines or area and shutdown itself after some time. The woman was very much terrified and finally dumped it at a scrap shop without their knowledge.

That’s called a hacked device

It is not 90s or early 2000s to easily call it as hacked.

The woman got no wifi or any dedicated internet at her house but her only source of internet was her phone and its hotspot for the laptop.

So hacking/installing a backdoor is not possible via phone hotspot. Understood

If her phone has a Lord Krishna wallpaper, then not even malwares can infect the device.

Ok hacker I got that your phone’s wallpaper is that of ankit fadias. Be cautious be alert!

I hope it gets hacked even when the internet is turned off or someone from your house backdoor enters midnight just to see if the device is functioning well or not.

rofl

No need to get defensive sir.

I fully believe your haunted laptop story.

Random mouse movements and keyboard clicks can happen if there is any hardware/software problem too. But if the clicks and movements have certain pattern, it is probably a shell executing commands.

You are in Tech Enclave, not some creepy reddit group that discusses naive horror stories. Please do justice to the ‘Tech’ word at least.

By that logic more than 40% threads shall be deleted here which don’t have any tech sense in them.

And just to clarify even I still do not believe if it was haunted or possessed but her laptop story was quite famous in our office. And even her colleague-friend experienced it once when she decided to spend the usual weekend at her place.

The laptop powers on itself and shuts down randomly but only post midnight. But during daytime when she power it on no unusual behaviour no random file opening literally nothing no errors encountered while operating.
