lost files in ubuntu

I used following command in ubuntu

gconftool-2 --shutdown
gconftool --recursive-unrest /apps/panel
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel

i used this command to recover missing task bar and taskbar icons.Apperently i got the missing taskbar.but unfortunately i lost my desktop icons,folders,mails everything deleted.Now pls help me out how can i recover those file…pls …pls. i am totaly blank now

Are they not there in ~/Desktop ? Or /home/username/Desktop ?
