Hey man, can you share the link ?
Oh, this sounds promising. Where to find such deals, I’m hearing this for the first time?
It is worth considering maybe but I would like to add don’t dismiss M4 completely either.
Do bit of research on this.
I think M4 and the upcoming M5 macbooks have much better A.I. processing than M1.
So check for all the pros and cons. Just don’t get carried away.
On paper definitely what @Raoskyneo suggested is one beefy system. But it is few generations old.
Yeah definitely, I’ll see what those sellers have in stock then compare with the m4 to make a informed choice. Thanks for looking out brother.
The problem with getting a used system is the reliability and how the machine was ab"used".
I’ve never had good luck with old systems especially in India. There are no proper refurbishing centers. The company ones are handled by the third party ones. The corruption is so bad in the industry that you will find people selling pulled parts which was supposed to be in those devices.
The prices are still inflated for those devices compared to the used market abroad besides india being one of the dumping grounds for E-waste.
eddy, the trick is to use iCloud and enable auto manage storage in settings.
Although I have a 512 SKU now , I had the 256 SKU earlier and never ran into issues.
This despite the fact that I have 25 years of photos/videos + a humongous amount of docs in my photos/docs folders.
The cost rationale being that one anyway needs cloud storage for safekeeping. Might as well save up on the local storage cost
PS: This may not apply for OP since his primary use case is video editing which will require plenty of local storage
That is exactly how I use 2TB icloud drive. With fiber internet getting cheaper, I have 1gbps line, makes life easier. 15+ years of memories all stored peacefully encrypted (of course)
Indeed - the transparent file management makes it completely hassle free without any user intervention.
Side benefit: All docs/photos etc are always fully available on phone/tablet as well as an exact replica of the PC documents/ desktop etc folders
One local alternative would be Immich for Photos and videos. I use that as well for my other systems mainly on Linux, Windoge and Androids.
512 is nice to have for better endurance rating. But this isn’t enough for editing at all. My brother edits on external ssd. He has 16/256 M2 Air. Works fine. But would suggest 512.
Maiwo usb 4 enclosure can give 3GB/s read write. But heats up bad. So, he uses normal cable and edits externally at 10Gb/s. He mentioned he has no problems with this.
Earlier 8gb ram macbooks died prematurely due to ssd wear from insufficient ram.
Buy according to budget
Budget is 1L. I am leaning towards 16/512gb variant of M4 Air.
Minimum24 GB Ram and 512 MB. Technically a 256 might be enough but drives slow down as they keep getting filled with data.
I work with videos and animation frequently. Its not just the storage of files you should account for; if the person is using Adobe apps, you need to factor in disk cache allocation. With a 6-8min video, Premiere Pro, After effects and Photoshop take up nearly 120-150gb extra in total (in my case with mix of animation, motion graphics, 3D, full res videos and proxy cache), else you can expect slow downs. No amount of constant working around is worth the time spent doing them in my opinion. Even 512gb doesn’t cut it in my use case.
As someone else mentioned, going for an older M processor with higher storage and ram is the more sensible approach. I don’t know much about local AI processing- given how tech is moving, I doubt we’d be doing much processing on our computers in the future.
Again, your use case may be much lighter, but its always better to have more than you need. Easy to say given the costs, but this is one of those things you unfortunately sign up for when going with Apple.
The A.I. processing is making video editing much easier.
Animation Series like Hanuman etc and recent Mahabharat are also A.I. done.
And even though these are big production work.
Even normal youtube videos are heavily bringing A.I. in their content.
Insta360 has also introduced A.I. processing in their latest action cameras.
So it is definitely here to stay for a while.
I think he was talking about local/offline processing.
If iPad OS was capable enough, would have recommended hands down. I am currently using ipad pro M4 11inch. Greatly limited by it’s OS, other wise a very capable machine.
@Afx have you figured out what NLE they are going to use?
DaVinci Resolve
