Microsoft offers first details on DirectX 11

Microsoft decided to offer the first details on its upcoming DirectX 11 API. DirectX 11 is set to be supported by Windows Vista and future versions of Windows like Win 7 that’s coming in 2010 and will be compatible with DirectX 10 and 10.1 compliant hardware. Feature wise, the new API will be offering:

**- New compute shader technology that lays the groundwork for the GPU to be used for more than just 3D graphics, so that developers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor

  • Multi-threaded resource handling that will allow games to better take advantage of multi-core machines
  • Support for tessellation, which blurs the line between super high quality pre-rendered scenes and scenes rendered in real-time, allowing game developers to refine models to be smoother and more attractive when seen up close**

Microsoft has yet to give an estimate about the release of DirectX 11 but it did promise that more info about it will be provided in the coming months.

So, no ray tracing support.. We may gonna see it in Dx 11.1 or Dx 12.
Tesselation support would bring smile on ATI camp, they have been showing off Tesselation since in XBOX 360 … :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :

yay, so “compute shader” hopefully means standard physics for all  i wish they’d actually make an “API” out of it… but i guess they leave it to individual game devs to figure it out on their own - flexibility.

bumping an old thread with a news link: GPU Computing and Windows 7 - Windows Partner Blog - The Windows Blog

Enter DirectCompute… looks like my hopes in previous post coming true… i hope OpenGL (or OpenCL whatever) can compete for Linux’s sake

edit:

ATI lagging behind?

No, love for nvidia GT300 I see. All I see is HD5xxx threads.

If the improve OpenGL and make better drivers, they will be able to get more performance out of there cards and many more fans too, linux fans to be precise.

^^ the “love” will only start when the card is about to be released and everyone is after 5xxx since it is being released first but if we know Nvidia the GT300 should outperform the 5xxx  anyhow lets see
