Motherboard Suggestions

Hey Guys

I’m almost ready to ditch my setup and move on,

Some of the parts that I have or would have in the next week are -

QX9650, OCZ FLEX II 4gb DDR2 @ 1150Mhz, Corsair 750W PSU, Samsung 22"

I’m looking to get the best board and video cards for the moment.

So if you guys can suggest me good crossfire mobos, cause I have little or no knowledge as far as Intel chipsets go, budget is upto $300±$50 for the mobo.

And about $800 for the video cards (dont know If I can discuss them here), but its easier to get info for both together.

Also AFAIK skull trail supports both SLI and Crossfire any other mobo that does that?

Hmmmm…

I’d suggest a mother board based on the latest X48 chipset [or the X38 as well!!] from DFI [like the DFI; :slight_smile:

DFI has some good offerings in the enthusiast and the performance segment;

Newegg.com - DFI LP LT X38-T2R LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Well for video cards, slap 2 ATI 4870s [~300USD for each] and u’re good to go;

:open_mouth: fftopic:

so ur setup is coming to the market place soon… or are u planning to use it as a download rig :rofl:

back to topic…

^^ Well yea download rig is good option!

Whats the difference between the 2 X48 T2r boards here

T2R>T2RS in terms of the looks department;

T2R boasts a proprietary TR NB HS bundled with it whereas the other sports a SB-NB-PWM HS-HP combo; :slight_smile:

wahh.. so now ppl are gonna buy motherboards based on looks???

Stalker dada, those DFI mobos look gawdly under UV light!!

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

All those PCI, PCI-E connectors, RAM slots, SATA cables, IDE connectors etc reflect those UV light; Sadly Saiyan is yet to keep a UV CCFL tube to bring that aspect out; :slight_smile:

heh he;

hey thanks a lot ppl,

I also noticed that some mobo’s have p35 in their coding what is that suppose to mean as against x38/x48 (I know I sound totally noobish :ashamed: )

If you are not an enthusiast ocer, I would suggest you to stay away from DFI.

I absolutely adore their boards. But at the same time one needs to spend lot of time to get everything right with dfi. Both these DFIs are very picky about what memory you choose. These boards have personality, they dont always end up like you want them to be :face_with_tongue:

If budget is not an issue ( $300 is plenty ), and you want easier board to work with, you can buy Asus Rampage Formula ( yeah yeah I know its asus but its good board :face_with_tongue: ) or Gigabyte X48-DQ6. I have used both these boards and both have turned out to be very good clockers. Rock solid, trouble free platforms. I cant say same with the DFI.

go for gigabyte as they have good features in the overclocking department and probably better support than asus(after all…who doesnt :face_with_tongue: )

you mentioned p35, it does support crossfire but both the pci-express slots work in 8x mode…so thats a big disadvantage…u want 2 16x slots to run your gpus
for that purpose, you want x38 or the x48 chipset(x48 is a small improvement over the x38 so anyone will do)

go with dfi if you want a gajillion options to overclock in your bios!!!

these are a few of the boards i found on newegg the asrock board seems a good deal as it supports both ddr3 and ddr2 memory .all the above are crossfire ready motherboards based on intel x48 chipsets.

thanks a lot guys! I guess x38/x48 would be my choice and I would love to tweak as many options as I can to get the last bit out of my setup. I had a asus before (m2n 32 sli deluxe) and had a pleasant experience overclocking it, but I dint have to go through their support all though I think the boards are pretty good, I would like to go with the asus rampage formula or the dfi’s, have no experience wit gigabyte’s and I will have OCZ FLEX II (stock clock = 1150mhz 5-5-5-15)for these boards, does anyone think that the dfi board wont take this memory?

I suggest you go through this thread @ xs.

There search for your memory.
Typically DFI is very picky about the memory. Even their P35 boards are the same.

I am using Gigabyte X48-DQ6 at the moment. Beautiful board. Has all the options you will ever need. Clocks high without too much efforts. Has worked with every memory set I have thrown at it.
If you dont need extra raid SATA ports and fancy heatpipes and copper back plates, you can even settle for X46-DS4 which is basically same board as DQ6 with these changes. And trust me on this that this board is lot easier to live with than DFI. I have gone through DFI myself and though I miss the hardcore nature of the DFI, life is lot simpler with Gigabyte :face_with_tongue:

Hasn’t it been the case always Funky dada.
Not only RAM (maybe even at stock if you very lucky :joy: ), DFI nF4 even refused to work stable with certain power supplies earlier. :face_with_tongue:

Most people are better off staying away from DFI unless they have the time and patience to thoroughly research what components to get and to set it up right. :slight_smile:
Mobos from As00s and GB are way too forgiving and better for day to day use, even when OCed decently high. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

How about this one guys?

Asus Maximus Formula II

Also leaning towards Rampage a bit, the x48 tr2 looks expensive @ $339,

which one of these and the one mentioned above would you guys pick

if you want your money worth when it comes to dual gpu crossfire setup, the only way to go is X38/x48. There is noticeable performance difference between X48 crossfire and P45 crossfire with modern 4800 series cards.

And yes the DFI x48 will be freakin expensive.

If its between Rampage and Gigabyte X48 DQ6, i will take gigabyte board. Once I got it all setup properly this board is fabulous to work with. Plenty of options in bios, rock stable, easy to clock. Mind you Rampage is not that bad in either of these departments, but DQ6 is more fun to work with and more forgiving at times.

Thanks Funky

so x48’s brings us between rampage/dq6/dfi tr2, but just for info wats the difference between p35/p45 and x38/48.

I have a good feeling about rampage, the thread on xtremesystems on rampage is good! will search for dq6, and have to confirm if it will take my memory that I mentioned before! If it does I would want to go with your advice!
