My new rig....a review required :)

Hi,

Will most probably be getting a new rig this week. Bit premature but i m getting a good deal on a 79ooGTX so couldnt resist the temptation :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Only changing the CPU. (Finally good bye to the socket A :face_with_tongue: )

This is what I am looking at :

AMD 4400+
Asus M2N-mx
1Gb X 1 DDR2 667.
Powersafe gold 500W

Using existing 15" CRT + PATA HD 80 Gb + DVD/RW + Keyb/Mouse

Reasons:

  1. getting only 1Gb as tight on budget. Will add another Gig in about 2 months
  2. SATA HDD also same as 1.. Will get 250Gb.
  3. Getting M2N-mx for a specific reason:
(will use linux too so dont want AT 690G. i kno the open source driver is coming..but as per anandtech..that will take quite some time n i wont risk it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: )
7900GTX is a dual slot card. But i dont want to sacrifice a PCI slot (out of 2 on the mobo)
    and as per the pics:

Jetway AMD 690G:

M2A VM:

M2N MX:

M2N PV VM:

So if i use the M2nMX, i only lose a PCI express 1X slot  + No onboard features like DVi etc required anyway

Anything i am missing out here?

Now all that remains is the cabinet where i need help.

Need a good cabinet. only requirement is cheap (<=1.5k) Well ventilated (esp for the 7900GTX :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: )(can put in fans n stuff of course providing it has space for the fans  ) lots of HDD racks n availability in Pune
Saw some 'Circle branded cabinets at my dealer yday. looked pretty decent with a red and black look. dunno how it is from inside cos will go n take a look again…
wat about zebronics?
what other options do i have? Looks/LEDs etc not required. All i care about is functionality…:ashamed:

Looking forward to help

[OT PLUG/]PS.: AMD socket A + 512Mb @ 266 + 6200LE available cheap [/OT PLUG]

2nd option:

nforce 650i mobo (galaxy/xfx) with the E2160 for about the same price. Thinking of overclocking it to 2.5-2.6Ghz, have heard thats possible without changing any voltage settings etc…

everything else stock…

HELP!!!11 always get soooooo confused :frowning:

about the sale . please put them on hold if you’re willing to ship to chennai. will let you know by EOD

i have a friend who needs the RAM, and might be interested if the card is an AGP and the socket A is faster than a sempron 2400, especially if you can let go of it cheap :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

bump :frowning: any suggestions on the E2140 n mobo?

Do not buy the XFX 650i, most of the boards imported in the last couple of months have had problems. Get the BIOSTAR TForce TP35D2-A7 - excellent vfm mobo.

go for amd…its cheaper..and u get decent motherboards for low prices.and this cpu has virtualisation support..

and 4400+ shud cost u around 3.5k..what more u need.

@Shade…good :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: now u know any place in Pune where i can pick that up  else not possible na re. Maybe the galaxy 650i then? thats also same reference model based board n 500 cheaper

@cricfan: i know  me old AMD fan :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: thing is, i dont need a decent motherboard since getting separate graphics card anyway  + good point..so by virtualisation support, what do you mean? does it mean that i cant run vmware n stuff on the system? or something else? + the 4400+ is more around 4k i believe :frowning: + me only being swayed by the point that i can easily OC teh 2140 to 2.5-2.6Ghz without much work :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Still confused though :frowning:

yes..the vmware stuff…vmware will work proper..no jerky movements on the desktop.u have to use it..real cool concept.i intend to use it..coz i will b preparing for my mcse.i have read that with decent ram(quantity)..u can setup a proper network on a single pc..here in bangalore..the ram rates for transcend 667 is 1.2k approx.

i have decided..finally…will b getting my cash by next week..it will b 5200+ & biostar 7050pv combo.another reason for me going the amd way…is that i will buy a new comp next dec or so..so investing in a costly intel rig is not a good choice.

4400+ is surely not 4k..its listed at 3.6k on net…u shud get it at 3.5 max on street.i have enquired about 5200+ and it costs u 5550..

will call the shop tomorrow..and will let u know the price of 4400+..the shop guy said 4600+ is not available…

hey

u mean i cant use vmware with the 2140 kya?sure? any links?

ram transcend 667 1Gb 1.35 here

  • me will have to keep mostly same rig for 2 yrs or more..was thinkin 2140 for a while n then later upgrading to a second hand quad or something

  • if i can get a P35 based board then i wud b able to upgrade to peryns too thats what. only processor upgrade i ll do later u c.

4400+ for 3.6k? where? itwares shows 4k only

me still partial to amd..but 2nd option is 2140 cos i heard i can OC to 2.6 easily on stock with no issues at all… + i think that ll give better performance than 4400+ @ stock …wat do u think? especialy thining me not changing whole cpu+mobo combo again anytime soon

me very confused n need to buy this weekend..cos need to close the deal on a second hand 7900gtx for 9.5k thats why the rush

Prices: 4400+ + M2N-MX : 7k

E2140 + galaxy 650i : 7.4k

So almost same pricin… + 2140 OCed from 1.6Ghz to 2.5G gonna give quite a good performance increase too :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: so me tiltin for it…

Any idea what P35 boards going for ?

yes you can run vmware on 2140, just that the amd has optimisation to run that software better.

Hey just bot a E2140 with GBP-35 DS3.Took about 5 mins to OC and change memory settings.OC to 2.66Ghz(333*8). I suggest you go this way.Cheaper and stable. Also no need to increase the voltage.
Regards

^^^^Thanks  Mobo ur using a bit expensive so will probaby get the galaxy 650i with the 2140

But…now there are rumors of an AMD cut on 8th Oct…lets c…Might be able to hold off the rig till then?..

EDIT: on the other hand…no use :frowning: price cut only for 5000+ and up. And that too by ~10$ ~Rs 400. No difference to the 4400+. I was thinkin mayb reduce the 4800+ to the same price :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

check out hunt3r’s rig TechEnclave, it’ll be better than the AMD option u r having atm.

^^^ Thats one good rig!!! n those prices …doubt will get anything similar in Pune tho…especially Biostar stuff…looks like the galaxy 650i @ 4600 will have to do  + other prices too i cant find anything similar here…everything around 100-200 more :frowning:

i wud prefer 1Gb X 1 DDR2 800Mhz instead of 667mhz and add another 1Gb X 1 DDR2 800mhz in future…

1GB-667 = Rs. 1200 approx
1GB-800 = Rs. 1600-1700 approx

^^^ Pune…

1Gb 667 @ 1350

1Gb 800 ~1800 or higher…

so ll c depending on my budget.. + 667 to 800 doesnt give that gr8 a perf boost i believe..esp for the budget  Still open on this though..depends on how much money i will have when i do the build and prices that day…

Oh!! Huge price diff in RAM. I’m sure u’ll save more thn 1000-1500 bucks, if u cum to Lammy, Mumbai (Prime ABGB wud be best choice) n assemble. Obviously, feasible only if u can spend the whole day for it.

As, it takes 2hrs in ST bus frm Mum-pune @ Rs. 60 (correct me if wrong)

no thx. dont have that much time. or the inclination for the mumbai trip :face_with_tongue:

Also, since the 650i is 1333 FSB, will it support penryn?
