need a kind of dumb terminal

I was wondering if I can use 2 sets of keyboard/mouse/monitor with a computer.
would I be needing any hardware for this or is it not possible to begin with…
Purpose:
For example, i have a linux distro installed and I should be able to login to the same computer with different accounts simultaneously using each set. One will be with the computer and the other in another room.

The reason I am asking this is my dad uses a p3(650mhz) with 256mb ram and its a lil slow so was wondering if there is a way he can share my system which is strong enough(Q6600 with 2GB ram)

I have tried to use remote desktop with windows installed on vmware but the network speed is not that good.
TIA

Install the free vmware server. Then you wont need remote desktop. The VM can be running on your system and your dad candirectly access it all using teh Vmware interface over the network. Works pretty well

Thanks for the reply techie_007

Well I tried it and it seems to have same issue as remote desktop
It works alright but it feels like I am working on the p3 hardware :frowning:
I don’t know much about this but is there a way i can increase overall network speed so that it doesn’t feel so sluggish when used across the network.
Currently I think the network is 10mbps(thats what it shows on my LAN status window) and I am using 2 computers and the modem connected to a hub.
Any hardware upgrades that might help with this??

Thanks in advance

Yes. Check what speeds your lan cards are. I would guess your hub is probably 10mbps and limiting your speed.

Take a cross crimp cable n try directly connecting the 2 PCs. Then try vmware once. If its faster, great. The hub is the culprit. Else maybe the connection is slow due to some other reason.

You have only two computer so connect the two computer directly using a Cross cable that way you will have 100MB/s.

Yeah it turns out my hub is 10mbps max
the lan card on p3 can do 100 mbps so I guess that would be the max i can get.
I will try with a cross over cable and see if there is any speed gains but I am gonna need a substitute for that hub as I need at least 3 ports. 2 for computers and one for the modem for the internet. would a switch do any good?
Also I may have to get a wireless router some time soon(probably dec)
would that take care of this?
I’ll get back after trying vmware on crossover later

Both a switch (100mbps) and a wireless router (>25mbps real world?) would be faster  Should help speedwise.

Try a crossover first
