Need advice - building a new pc

Building a 9600x based PC for my son. Need the following advice -

  1. is price differential of 9070xt over 9060xt justified? he will mostly play shooters like cyberpunk, valorant and some RDR2. No Man’s Sky and stellaris are some of the other cpu intensive games that he plays. 1440p output.
  2. which will be the best value of money B650 motherboard to pair up?
  3. Cabinet suggestions for the above? I want as compact as possible with good airflow - his rooms gets really warm

Thanks for helping out.

My two cents - you can go as compact as you want without worrying about temps for 1440p AAA gaming.

My older system is 10 litres https://imgur.com/a/sff-itx-gaming-pc-amd-6600xt-8gb-super-slim-10-ltr-e56yxRR The cpu gpu temps are 60-70 at gaming sessions as you can see.

My current system is sub 5 litres https://imgur.com/a/minipc-egpu-setups-rZ0tbfw and the temps and noise are even better at 1440p AAA gaming.

Not to say you should venture into SFF or eGPU in the pursuit of compact (I’m obsessed) but sub 20 liter mATX is very good middle ground if price is a concern.

I have narrowed down the build as follows -

CPU - 9600X
GPU - Sapphire nitro 9070xt

Motherboard - Asrock B650 Steel legend
Cabinet - Corsair 4000D
PSU - MSI A750GL
Ram - Ripjaws S5 CL30

any views on where i can optimize further - from a cost savings perspective without sacrificing performance too much?

The Sapphire Pulse 9070xt should serve you better in my opinion. It’s substantially cheaper than the Nitro, and the performance penalty is negligible.

Nitro also has the faulty 16 pin power connector i think, not worth the risk of burn and premium price.

Note that google search often gives price of 9070 when you search for 9070xt.

Also maybe avoid Asrock motherboards, they have trouble with x3d chips, which 9600x isnt but still can go for alternatives.

any suggestions? the steel legend was fitting the bill perfectly in terms of price and specs

The MSI B650M Gaming Plus Wifi should serve your needs if it comes within the budget. Otherwise, a b850 gaming x wifi 6e should do the trick. I think TechYesCity did a video with a 9900x failing in an asrock motherboard.

@Tracer_Bullet is correct. The Nitro is a 16-pin connector GPU.

I don’t know whats good value in current market. Search this forum for recent advice, there should be some good options.

I am using gigabyte B650m DS3H. Works great ( with 7800x3d ).

I have had good experience with gigabyte earlier, used their ultra-durable range for some 7 years. Will check out the B650M and the B850. Thanks

Current market may have better options, yes i have been happy with gigabyte for long time.

I was actually going to go for Asrock initially but luckily they were not available back then.

The RAM, CPU, and GPU are solid picks. As others have mentioned, you could get a better B850 board for the same/lower price (what I saw was 23k for the B650 Asrock). Regarding the case, you can select a MATX case with multiple fans preinstalled.

deepcool-ch160-plus

everything looks good honestly however if i could change one thing, i would change the cabinet to a ch160 plus by deepcool, insanely good cabinet for the price. also if you want to go itx, i am talking sub 20 liters, i would suggest you take a look at ch160, you will have to get an itx mobo like b650i + a smaller psu

ch160 plus will be compatible with your current build while being very compact, cant say enough good things about this case and deepcool in general.

also 9070xt is so worth it if your son will never get into anything related to nvidia like ML, hardcore video editing, blender, etc, etc, etc

9070 is a better overall card.

It gives 90-95% of 9070xt fps with 100W lower power consumption

he’s 15 .. so unlikely that he is getting into any such stuff anytime soon ..

you’re never too young to learn : )
