get a hosting via hostinger, you will find best deal on black friday. i also offer free hosting so let me know if you need it.
Which domain registrar are you using?
I am using git pages for hosting a static blog. It is free and you can use hundreds of Jekyll templates for quickly being up and running
some recommendations:
hugo for static site generator
cloudflare pages for hosting and building from your git repo
Import the domain in cloudflare: docs, hosting by yourself can be quite a headache with constant attacks on the site from botnets and cloudflare free tier is very generous.
use blogger.com
I used spaceship.
Wanted to buy from GoDaddy but the reputation of GoDaddy is quite bad in reddit.
This sounds good. Dm,ing you.
godaddy is really bad and expensive. spaceship is best
Can you share link, spaceship?
My bad.. it’s spaceship
Yes it is spaceship not launch ship
If you have a little bit of technical skill / are willing to learn (writing in markdown, how to use Git and GitHub), then host a Jekyll site on GitHub using GitHub pages. Here’s the easiest way to deploy one: GitHub - barryclark/jekyll-now: Build a Jekyll blog in minutes, without touching the command line.
If you don’t want to waste time tinkering and just want to focus on writing, then use WordPress.com. Even the most basic plan - personal plan - that costs Rs. 160 lets you use your custom domain and is absolutely enough to get started.
I recommend the second option, just because it will let you focus on your actual goal - writing on the internet - instead of getting distracted by other things.
Have my .in domains running on spaceship for 3 years now. Cheaper with privacy masking. Use one of the hosters from low end box, purchased during Black Friday. Expense is about 1000 a year.
Actually I do want to tinker and thought of hosting myself locally but that will take time.
Right now my main aim is to get ideas from you guys and calculate what fits my goal.
Thank you for your suggestion
Damn black friday is quite far for this year. Anyways I have the domain locked for 5 years
Fair enough. I haven’t tried it but you can also try those lifetime Wordpress services on StackSocial. Some of them are from reputed hosters and quite cheap assuming they last 2-5 years at least.
This can be done easily. I have my website up and running in a Debian LXC (Proxmox VE) using react JS through Cloudflare and NGNIX. (My website ain’t critical so even if it’s down due to my isp, no harm is done)
Agreed it may take some tinkering but it’s doable. However, before getting into it, do note that you will require power backup (so that website remain online 24*7) and a backup Internet connection in case one of your ISP’s service is down.
There are other ways to host other than on your homelab such as on github and then connecting it through Cloudflare which will ensure that the blog remains online.
Firstly though, you need to decide how much tinkering you wish to do and how critical would it be for you to keep it online 24*7.
So as of right now I live in rented place without power backup so hosting locally is not possible.
I liked your idea of GitHub connected to cloudflare. Can you share some docs about it?
use blogger.com , to create your blog and connect it to your custom domain at spaceship by updating the CNAME records as shown in the blogger settings.
