New gaming PC for a golf simulator

Hi Guys,

I currently run my golf sim on a PC built in 2019 [with a lot of help from you guys].

Original config was

  1. Intel i5 9600k overclocked

  2. Z390 Aorus MB

  3. 32gb DDR 4 RAM

  4. 2 1 TB NVME SSDs

  5. AIO liquid cooler

  6. NZXT cabinet

  7. 2070 Super GPU

  8. 850 watt power source

When I started using it for my golf sim, I sold the 2070 and got a 3080ti

Now I find that with a 4K projector, 2 4K TVs, and multiple swing recording cameras, the CPU is slowing things down.

The sim software is

and it runs on the Unity engine. 2019.4 version, I think.

In addition, I have various other software running like the launch monitor software and OBS.

So, in your guys opinion which CPU should I go for? Intel/AMD? And suggestions for each?

Willing to spend 30-35-40K for CPU [olane, without MB] and of course whatever is needed for the rest. I want it to be future proof for at least 4 years. I presume the total build cost will be about 80K without the graphics card? Once I get settled on CPU, I’ll be back for advise on other components

I presume that I should look at a CPU WITHOUT integrated graphics? Any advantage to having integrated graphics when I have a GPU? Can I run one monitor from integrated graphics to reduce the load on the 3080?

On the golfing fora everyone says that the 3080ti is adequate for a few years, so I’ll keep that for my new build.

On another note, I will be selling this PC [without the GPU] after I build my new PC in case anyone is interested.

I always prefer a CPU with iGPU for cases when dGPU might be causing issues. I do run my 2nd monitor using iGPU instead of dGPU (my CPU is i5 12400, opted it over R5 5600X 3 years ago).

If you want raw CPU performance, R9 7900 is a great CPU for 34k or so. 9800X3D is the best gaming CPU right now at close to 50k.

I assume you are reusing PSU, SSDs & cabinet. The above mobo can easily handle a 9800X3D as well in case you fancy that.

Whatever you do, do not get the X3D variant of the 7900.

CPU with igpu helps a lot with troubleshooting. And these days when everyday there are new issues with nvidia drivers, it becomes even more important.

Is Gamers Nexus a reliable youtuber? From his video I narrowed down to

R7 9800x3d expensive but if I get some benefit over the others willing to spend for it

R9 9900x much cheaper and as per what I’ve read at 4K the x3d and x performances are practically the same? And, that it would help running other software at the same time, like OBS and Protee Labs [my LM software] over an x3d? 50% more cores and threads than the 9800x3d.

R7 7800x3d seems almost as good but only 4K less so is it worth saving 4 K to get an older CPU?

i7 12700K much cheaper but again 3 generations old, but I hear that 1th and 14th gen are disasters

R7 5700x3d again very old but inexpensive

Thoughts?

You will trigger a lot of people if you ask if Gamers Nexus is reliable (answer is yes).

Let me lay down the options for you in terms of CPU:

  • i5 12400 (under 12k) - Best budget choice with DDR4 RAM (dead platform but is cheap)

  • R5 7600 (18k) - Something better on new platform, can upgrade CPU later w/o changing mobo & RAM (will cost a few thousands more than 5700X3D based rig but gets an iGPU, future CPU upgrade possibility & has similar performance)

  • R9 7900 (34k) - Good for its price if you want producticvity as well as gaming

  • R9 7950X (48k) - For pure productivity focussed rig

  • R7 9800X3D (48-50k) - For pure gaming focussed rig

Other CPUs don’t matter IMO. Realistically, R9 7900 is more than enough for you, hence is my top pick for your budget. Obviously you can opt to save money with R5 7600 as well, if you want.

Off topic - why would Gamers Nexus trigger people here?

On topic. If you thing the R9 7900 is good, why not the R9 9900x?

From what I have researched the extra cores/threads will help with multitasking, and for 4K which is more GPU intensive there is negligible difference between the 9900x and the 9800x3d?

  1. Gamers Nexus’ Steve is nicknamed Tech Jesus. He is one of the best tech reviewers out there, not for common folks but for those who know a bit of technical stuff & shit companies do.

  2. If you like wasting 6k+ for 5% performance gains, can go ahead. But 7950X or 9800X3D are better CPUs at 48k, if you have money to waste, better buy one of these. AMD can do shitty pricing because of lack of competition, Ryzen 9000 is the result. If anyone researches a bit into CPUs, AMD is the only choice.

  3. There will be some poorly optimised games where 9800X3D will help with the 1% low fps even at 4K, thus improving the gaming experience, especially in scenarios where 9900X makes the game drop below 60fps but 9800X3D can sustain 60+ fps. Situation of poorly optimised games will continue to get worse with time. If Intel was able to compete, 9800X3D might have been 40k or so to begin with considering R7 7700 is 26k, instead of 48-50k.

Not always, and it depends on how the game is optimized to run and how CPUs will be used. There will be instances, that even at 4K, you may run into CPU-bound scenarios.

Wrong chart but OP can watch this video.

Problems around 60fps will be rare but as I mentioned earlier, but mostly will be related to 1% low fps. I can notice the difference when fps falls below 60fps in a fast paced action game, but 60+ fps is all good. I did somehow play Starfield where in city my CPU was not to maintain 60fps, but 80-90fps was easy in other regions.

Thanks again. Is the 7950x better than the 9900x. Wow. Wouldn’t have imagined. Will watch that video later though.

Thanks. That video was very informative. Reinforces that I don’t need a x3d processor, but I still think getting a 9900x at 40K might be better value than 7950x at 46.5k or a 9800x3d at 48K? Thoughts on that? It will help multitasking right?

Also now thinking of the 9700x. Its 31K, so quite a bit saved. Will this be a significant improvement over my i5 9600k?

Yes, it’ll be a HUGE improvement.

I don’t know which benchmarks you are reading. Ryzen 9000 is just 5-10% faster. Heck, if 7800X3D was still 35k, it will easily sell more than 9800X3D even though 9800X3D is the rare Ryzen 9000 chip which has decent improvement.

Check review by Gamers Nexus & Hardware Unboxed (apparently HUB didn’t review it, not worth their time I guess?). Can read Tom’s hardware, techpowerup, etc as well.

Thanks again for the help. What are your thoughts on the 9700x which is so much cheaper, as I will never need more than 60fps at 4K?

Also this is my final build plan with CPU still TBD. Thoughts? Anyone else with some suggestions?

MDComputers reliable?

They don’t have the 9700x is stock so any suggestions for a reliable vendor for that?

Why a 1000W PSU? What is your current 850 unit? Also, How many NVMe drives will you be running (including future upgrade considerations)? For the case, do you want a fish tank style or regular tower will do? An AIO is overkill for the kind of CPU you’ll be running.

Yes, MD is reliable.

My current is 850. Couldn’t find a 850 in white. Suggestions? PSU doesn’t need to be white but the cabling at least. Can I get white cables as extras? But also for a later GPU upgrade 1000 might be better?

AIO looks cool  BUT, if I go with an air cooler, is deepcool a good company? Also, then if I want to put fans on the top, I guess they should be intake fans? Then there will be 5 intake fans and only 1 exhaust fan. Is that OK?

Do I need to worry about these options when selecting a PSU?

I will reiterate this:

Let me lay down the options for you in terms of CPU:

  • i5 12400 (under 12k) - Best budget choice with DDR4 RAM (dead platform but is cheap)

  • R5 7600 (18k) - Something better on a new platform, can upgrade CPU later w/o changing mobo & RAM (will cost a few thousands more than 5700X3D based rig but gets an iGPU, future CPU upgrade possibility & has similar performance)

  • R9 7900 (<34k) - Good for its price if you want productivity as well as gaming

  • R9 7950X (48k) - For pure productivity focussed rig

  • R7 9800X3D (48-50k) - For pure gaming focussed rig

Other CPUs don’t matter IMO.

AIOs are overkill (AG620 or CM620S will keep R9 7900 cool), unless you are specifically spending for aesthetics (get Lian Li or MSI or Deepcool AIOs in that case, stay away from Antec). Won’t recommend Antec cabinet or PSU at all given your budget, prefer bigger brands. 21k B650 mobo is an easy bad value in my books as well.

Check Lian Li O11 for a fishtank case. White mobos are the most expensive IMO. Other parts don’t command too much of a premium.

FYI - I had helped a friend build an R5 7600 + 7900GRE almost white build for 1.25L

Thanks but a few questions from an over 60 year old luddite please.

  1. If the 7900 is a good buy under 34K for productivity and gaming, why not the newer 9700? BTW, I also do video work of my surgical videos.

  2. I saw the Deepcool LD 360 and it looks pretty cool for 12K. Thoughts?

  3. Which mobo would you recommend?

  4. Which PSU would you recommend with white cables?

  5. The Lian Li 011 in white is much more expensive and without fans but thats OK then I would need a bunch of fans so,

  6. Suggestions for a bunch of fans that would match somewhat the fans that come on the Deepcool?

  1. Because the 7900 has more cores/threads. Better for simulators/video editing.

  2. It’s fine for Aesthetics + performance. You can get it for 10k -

  1. ASrock B650 PG Lightning. Great VRMs at a reasonable cost. Will easily handle a 7900. Only con is no onboard BT/WiFi -
  1. MSI MAG A850GL White -
  1. Case & fans @@OMEGA44-XT may be of better help.
    [HEADING=2][/HEADING]
  1. R9 7900 outperforms R7 9700X. Slightly higher single core performance is not worth considering unless 9700X is 25k or so, in which case, money saving can be a point

  2. Your call. Check reviews by Gamers Nexus, Tom’s Hardware, etc. Don’t follow AIO market a lot as I will never buy them. Check for brands with 5 year warranty.

  3. Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX still remains my choice although it is not white or silver.

  4. MSI MAG A850GL White -

as suggested by @@PunkX 75 looks great

  1. Cheaper fish tank -

https://mdcomputers.in/product/deepcool-cg-series-mid-tower-cabinet-r-cg580-whnda0-g-1

  1. Extra fans -

(Poor value for sure but you are paying for aesthetics at this point). Maybe consider for a traditional white case, not fish tank? I got my friend Lancool 216 white or can consider CM TD500 Mesh White.
