after flashing openwrt 8mb is free. i have flashed openwrt on my ax23
Was it v3.2 1.28 (& which openwrt version) & where did you see 8mb ram free, in Luci GUI or via openssh command prompt window?
not ram. 16mb storage. 8mb free in luci gui. i installed some addons. openwrt v23
I mistakenly mention v3.2, I meant v1.28 of AX23 (3.2 is for C6).
if you check tp link firmware download site, it mentions same firmware for hardware v1.2=v1.2xx.
Can you guys suggest an OpenWRT router with following features:
- Support WPA2-Enterprise network
- USB 3.0 support for flash drives sharing etc.
- Dual Band WiFi
- WISP mode will be a plus.
I wish to use as a repeater to connect to a WPA2-Enterprise network and share it via ethernet and WiFi.
Looking for it on cheaper side, thanks in advance.
That is relative, what exactly is your budget. You will not find anything new with openwrt compatible with usb 3.0 port below 8-10k. You will have to either buy a used older model or get something from abroad (via US/Singapore/HK etc).
Try olx, there will be couple of options around 3-4k based on your location. But you need to have patience to get the right one
Olx works if buyer & seller are in same city & can meet physically. Also, for 3-4k you will not get anything much good for running latest openwrt v24.x which recommend at least 16mb rom (32mb & higher preferred) & 128mb ram (256mb & higher preferred) along with well supported wifi hardware (many openwrt supported routers have not so well supported wifi hardware resulting in poor wifi performance on those models).
As i mentioned, you need to have patience. I have seen MIMO Linksys , OpenWRT compatible routers for 3k-4k. These routers had 64/128MB Roms. Or try Marketplace in this forum.
That depends on luck mostly. The most capable openwrt router in used stuff section I have seen here was nighthawk 7000 with some antenna damage but even that won’t make much sense when new nanopi r3s is available for around 4k & will leave any router (even new with 15-20k market price) in dust when running openwrt.
Right, it’s luck. nanopi has only one port and no wifi. You can get tp link travel router and use openwrt in that case
Which one?
I bought one but it is not supporting openwrt.
The [Official Banana Pi OpenWRT router ](’

)is available in Banggood and ships to India. It’s pretty pricey though with the full kit over 12k.
There is Mikrotik Hex Rb750Gr3 available on Marketplace in this forum for 2.3k . The routerOS is very capable or you can overwrite it with OpenWRT.
nanopi from 2nd gen onwards have 2 ethernet ports.
He was talking about using a non-openwrt support travel router with a non-wifi openwrt supported device like nanopi.
Microtik routerOS basically requires doing PhD in networking to fully understand it. Installing openwrt on microtik devices is also not straightforward.
You can go for GL-iNet routers, they are pretty good (though pricey and you need to import them) -
After searching a lot of OpenWrt compatible router and even playing around with a few. I settled on a NanoPI R5C which runs FriendlyWrt, which is basically just another build of OpenWrt custom build for this device. With the much more powerful CPU and VRAM, I’m able to run multiple docker containers as well as my JellyFin server all in a device which fits within the palm of my hand. For the Wi-Fi, I have hooked up the NanoPI R5c to a Grandstream Wifi 6E AP, which is overkill for my needs, But I still went for it, just for future proofing. One the simplest and efficient network setup I’ve done till date.

From where did you source it ?
got it from here. Was a bit skeptical cus it was my first order from their site. But their customer support was amazing.
