PC for Rendering (Lumion/VRay etc.) 1.5L excluding GPU/PSU

Hello folks,

TE has always been my go to for tech, and I love building my own PC’s but it’s been at least 6 years since I built one and I had to research a lot to come up with some components. I’d like your advice if the components I chose are good enough. I’m also considering a used 12900K instead of 13700K provided I get a good deal on a used 12900K. I also might do a little bit of OC after a year when if it starts showing its age while rendering. Thank you for your help!

Your build is pretty much set. Some things you can look out for are-
a) i9 12900k or i7 13th gen is pretty toasty so getting a liquid cooler (at least 280 rad) would be better. I can understand the air cooler for peace of mind, Deepcool dual tower cooler does come under 5k. To get all the benefits of the CPU for rendering then I would suggest adding a contact frame, but that’s a bit risky and might void the warranty.
b) Motherboard is pretty solid, could go for ddr5 given prices are dropping, but still ddr4 is great. Just checkout for MSI service center in your area in case of a snafu
c) SSD prices are dropping by the day, 1tb phison e18 drives like kc3000 are going for 7.5k so why not 2 for 14-15k?
d) I would suggest going for cmr drive. (this list can help for confirming it’s cmr or not-

e) Wired keyboard- If budget permits you can get mech keyboards…

f) You would have to add a few fans and optimize positive airflow for continuous rendering scenarios, there are many options available like-
Arctic p12 (cheap and very good)
Noctuas nf-a12x25 (excellent but high price)
Xpg vento pro (middle ground)
Corsair, Cooler Master sickleflow, etc
Try to mix the fans from different vendors and set them at different rpm via bios pwm control, this will alleviate possible resonance issues.
g) UPS and Monitor choices are great

Why not consider AM5? It will be about 10k more thàn intel, but it will have better power efficiency and a better upgrade path.

In this budget:

Get Ryzen 7950x build with any ~20k motherboard
You can save some money by changing monitor, buy Benq 27incher with 95-98% DCI P3
Replace Seagate with WD for HDD or go with SATA SSD for storage.

As your requirements are graphics based - you could look at AMD instead of Intel (you will want a high core count processor!) for V-Ray

@@terence_fdes @@ishashank @@DestGod @@bssunilreddy the only reason I went for Intel instead of AMD is because after checking all the productivity reviews , the Core i713700K seemed more VFM over the 7900x and 7950x , I also want the CPU to have more cores so going below 79xx is not an option. About the power efficiency between Intel and AMD , I took a closer look and pretty much no system is going to be 100% all the time and Intel’s are efficient with the 8 Performance and 8 efficiency cores when at idle or normal loads the power efficiency figures would actually be pretty similar between intel and AMD. But i do agree on the point that with AM5 i have a better upgrade path and I have some serious thinking to do on that cause that will make my life easy when I have to upgrade in the future.

I think I should maybe double down on the monitor but the only reason I went for the 32 inch , was a video that did side by side comparison of the 27inch vs 32 inch and showed the difference in productivity (

) see 7:37 but if i can get a better CPU that will also be a win. I guess I have more thinking to do.

As for the HDD , i should indeed increase the budget and switch it to a SATA SSD or at least add a big one in there !
Thanks for the advice fellas , you have given me ideas so I have some more researching and thinking to do before I buy things.

True, power consumption readings should be taken with a pinch of salt. But when all cores are used (which I’m guessing is the case for most productivity workloads), the 13700K will draw 240w, even if it’sDR5 for a short period of time.
But if you are more comfortable with Intel, then you’ll have to address the memory issue as well. You could get high capacity DDR4 memory, or go with faster DDR5 memory. Not to mention that on a cheap DDR5 Z690 motherboard, when you add more number of RAM sticks, you’ll be forced to download them.
Maybe consider this-

MSI Z690 PRO A - 21k
2X 32GB DDR4 3600 C16-17k
Deepcool LT720 AIO-11.3K ( Again, it will draw 240W, even for short periods of time. AK620 will be able to sustain only upto 180w, especially in high ambient temp places)
SSD- 1TB WD SN 770-8K. (Fast SSDs still don’t mean much now. Even a normal PCIe Gen 3 SSD will be more than enough. So there’s no point in going with a drive that boasts of faster sequential speeds but has no IRL difference, yet costs nearly 3k more).
Secondary storage- Crucial P3 2TB SSD-12k
Case- Deepcool CG560-5.5k
Monitor- BenQ EW3270U-29K (VA panel, not IPS, so viewing angles will not be the best. You get deeper blacks then IPS tho)

If you are spending that much, I would recommend going AM5, you get a longer and solid upgrade path. And don’t forget X3ds will be available by next quarter. The only intel 13th gen that gives a solid value in my opinion is 13600k, beyond that it’s a matter of who gives you a solid upgrade path. Not to mention your AM5 mobo will be as future proof as they come.

My AM4 is still going strong, I will get a 5800x3d and it will be set for another 3 years of great gaming performance.

Your research is on the right path. However it’s never too easy to decide between an AMD or Intel. I have been an Intel fan for well over 30 years and they have served me well - both at work (where I have always used two-way xeon processor motherboard workstations) and single proc for my personal needs.
It all works out with your BUDGET & What would give you the best Bang for the Bucks.

Considering your need - Lumion & V-Ray
There are a few things which you CANNOT compromise at the Start
A Good NVidia GPU [you have a 3080Ti which is good to go] and minimum of
64GB RAM (32 x 2) … go for DDR5 and Z790 motherboard - both these will have you covered for the next 6-8 years.
After finalizing these (Processor + Motherboard + RAM) - then work backwards for all your peripheral components.

Just 1 Querry - Why do you need a UPS (sorry for asking - BUT if Voltage & Power fluctuations are the issue where you reside - THEN THIS IS A MUST BUY)

I am on a tight budget - so GPU 3060 can wait (will depend on the Intel UHD 770 for a few months) and a 4K Monitor 27" can come in later.
Rest all I have - 850W PSU & Thermaltake The Tower 900 Snow White Ed cabinet and two 23" old gen monitors

Guys I got a used 13700K from a TE user for an affordable price (closer to a 13600K price) , making it sweeter and more VFM for me as my budget has is not stretchable. With that said , my eyes are on DDR5 path for the sole reason that I’ll be able to use the RAM kit for the next upgrade whether it is an AMD or Intel.

Thank you for saving me 3k on the drive. I did a little more research and indeed the extra 3k is not worth the small performance advantage SN850x gives. SN770 will just do fine for me.

Trust me , I went running towards the 79xx series when I wanted to build it but when I was able to get a used 13700k at a good price it became a no brainer for me.

I believe going with dram-based SSD for boot/cache/project drive is better for rendering work in the long run.
PCIe gen 4 or gen 3 wouldn’t matter-

Initially, your choice of motherboard sounded good given it provides 4 m.2 slots ootb.
As for Archival storage, 2tb hdd would be could but stretching your budget a little bit with savings on other components can net you 2tb sata ssd (dramless) for 8k these days.
WD20EZBX (7200 rpm) is SMR whereas WD20EZRZ is CMR (5400 rpm) at a similar price. Go for the latter.

Ignore this drive. Too many reported cases of the drive failing (Google keyword: mn-5236). It could be the reason it’s being sold at that price.
Also, the Adata site mentions it as 3D Nand so they might switch and bait, you never know.

Final update on what I ended up buying. I listened to you guys and dumped the idea of DDR5 even though it was future proof after looking at the DDR5 kit prices. I initially saw the price only for single DDR5 RAM stick and i just multiplied it by 2 and had a number in my head, little did i know I will get a good 64GB DDR4 kit for 32GB DDR5 price, so did the switcheroo. One impulse buy in there as well. I bought them all locally in a shop here in Chennai who is a well connected dealer.

thank you everyone for the suggestions I could not read through the suggestion at the end but you guys helped me zone in on the best components although I did not get some off them locally. Again , I was lucky to get the used parts when I was looking for it with decent warranty on them.

Looks great, congrats. Some of the prices are a little over the top, like the monitor and the cooler. A new RTX 4070 Ti would have cost around 80k, as is a big uplift over the 3080 Ti, but the 3080 Ti is still a beast of a GPU.
Btw, I think your case only comes with only 2 pre installed fans. I’d suggest picking up a 3 fan pack in Amazon for better airflow and temps. There’s the Deepcool RF120 3 fan pack for 1.5k, or an individual Corsair AF120 for 500Rs.

I agree , and to a certain extent regret that I didnt have enough time at the end but if i did , I would have ordered the Asus Proart for 41k from mdcomputers, its an absolutely beautiful monitor with great specs but after using this monitor I really cant find any fault in it. I would’ve considered 4070TI if i had the extra budget , t think I’ve already crossed my budget here. And as for the fan , i forgot to mention , i did get a CM sickleflow fan 120mm. Would i need more? 2 intake , 1 exhaust for now.

Check your GPU and CPU temperatures via HWInfo, and run a short stress test like cinebench R23 (for CPU) and Furmark(for GPU). If temps are within acceptable range (below 85C), there wont be any need.

tested and looks good with just the one extra fan, besides it’s used in a room where AC will be on when it is used.
