Yes, basically for 759
you get the power adapter included,
for 284
you only get the USB3.0 to SATA3 converter without power adapter. But you can use your own if you have one.

Thats what I are saying This PiBox is the cheapest powered USB3 to SATA
I thinks itâs not guaranteed to get a model with power adapter option if we buy a PiBox non-powered.
This is from reviews of PiBox USB3 to SATA cable.
Sounce seems to have this option even if we buy without adapter.
Thatâs a pretty long thread for an adapter haha!
The thread is about PiBox specific adapter, you get what you see with this brand. Be sure to buy a powered one if you need one as they mention it in the listing, and buy from a reputed place with lots of reviews so as to not get scammed. The link mentioned by OP is fine to buy from as I bought the same and am using.
Ordered this, will 12V 1A adapter work?
I donât know if 12V 1A will work reliably or not, the adapters we normally see that come with external HDDs most of time have 12V 2A power adapter with them.
The HDDs normally donât use 2A of current, only when the motor starts to spin that is usually the peak load. But still 12V 2A supply is recommended.
Also if you are using any kind SSD then make sure to not use any power adapter with it. Power from USB port is enough for it.
of those two - sounce and pi box, if you were, which would you buy today?
yes looking at that too. Will buy one.
From the images attached in amazon reviews, Pibox one seems much faster than sounce. So purely for ssd, it seems to be better. Not sure as tester may have bottleneck elsewhere.
Has slightly better review score and is much more popular.
As per reviews, both might have same chipset - AS2235. Dunno what is âUASPâ but both claim to support it. Might need to install drivers on windows for it.
I am not sure, go with the one with better reviews I guess.
One thing on sounce is that, the model which doesnât come with power adapter, doesnât mention that it has a DC power jack for hooking power adapter.
Even in the images the power jack is not there.
I got to know from the comments that external power can be hooked into this.
I would buy the sounce cause I already have 2 of them in use working fine. But I wonât be surprised if I ordered one now and got some different version which doesnât have the external power option.
My review from back when I thought I could be a reviewer, ha

Iâm still using it 6 years later
Not recommended at all. Amazon US is filled with horror stories of such multiple drives usb docks destroying HDDs/data. Only a usb dock with each bay having a separate usb controller is considered somewhat good enough that too for a JBOD configuration but those docks are expensive & rare even abroad.
Oh? I am sorry to reccomend that if that is the case. I was unaware of them using a single USB controller for all drives.
I was recommended this particular one (by a feiend who uses it) 4-bay dock. So it was my assumption most docks would work similarly, my bad.
These docks are risky, as long as your luck works you will not face any issues in a JBOD configuration (aka not raid) in such usb based docks but in worst case scenario you may end up losing your data &/or hdd. Doesnât seem like your friendâs dock has different usb controller for each bay.
If that is the case, are there any decent budget docks you can suggest? I was planning on getting a dock for my home server.
Even I am using the sounce one. I ordered it without dc adapter but received the one which has jack for using dc power.
I donât think they are making specific non powered option because it doesnât make sense to create moulds for two different models just for a barrel jack.
Itâs likely they just stopped making the one without the power jack, so itâs cheaper now just to make one model.
The one I bought in 2019 doesnât have a power input.
I donât suggest using docks for 3.5" HDDs except for 1/2 bay dock for some quick/emergency file transfers/backup etc. Just buy a cheap local brand old style cabinet with 4-5 3.5" hdd bays & buy a cheap processor+mobo+psu combination for 7-8k & connect via gbps ethernet. That will be much better.
If somebody buys sounce listing do update what you receive
It has the power jack. iâm getting 170Mbps write speed on an old 2.5" barracuda smr hdd.
donât have 12V 2A adapter or 3.5" drive to test, maybe others who ordered can share their updates.
edit: eject also works
Your write speed response is tempting me to buy one , have lot of old HDD lying around, which i can put to some use.
