Planning My First Home Server: Hardware & Setup Advice Needed

Please share other than media sharing why does one need a home server.

I also am thinking of building a nas server for plex. I am often confused when online guides talk about making containers using proxmox.

Well here’s the thing you need to focus on the nas part first once that is done you need to Mount the nas to proxmox and create mount points so your container knows what it should be looking for

For example you made a container for jellyfin now jellyfin is specially made for tv shows and movies so your mount points (directories) need to have those media segregated

For media segregation you need radaar (movie) and sonaar(tv shows). Apart from which you’ll need prowlaar (indexer)

Apart from which you can store almost anything and sync between devices (syncthing) open source substitute for Google drive

Above all Take baby steps don’t try to get everything all at once start with a VE (proxmox) get a mini pc. It’s a rabbit hole.

Dang that is next level :joy:

Yes, I do have a 750ti but I might keep it as of now. Later I might throw in my current 14600kf or any 12th 13th 14th gen cpus and my 3060ti/ 2nd hand amd cards as I might upgrade it down the line. Anyways thanks for the info.

Hey thanks for the advice.

Yes I did consider building it myself, but later dropped the plan.

I was planning atleast 3400g , I know I might save a few bucks, but the size would become an issue for me.

So yours is a raid 5 config.

What processor are you running ? And what is your idle power draw.

Regarding OS and build I have now got even more confused reading everyomes comments.

Now i am thinking everyone is right and I should also look for custom build instead of p330.

Thank you for suggestion on unraid. Isn’t it a paid OS ?

I sure will have a lot of pics initially and yes I would love to know about this.

Currently I have a 5700x and 3070ti , and can use this for initial processing.

I will surely dm you soon once I sort a few things.

Yes you are right, 4x 2tb nvme ssd will cost about 24k. Already have 1 x 2tb ssd

I have an existing 2tb ssd which i plan to use for os and containers.

I have about 5-7 external 1tb 2.5 hdd, I was sorting out my data and have about 3tb of pics and 4tb of data already, so yes I will need to have a lot more of space than 8tb.

My main purpose is to reduce these hdd and to have my data at my fingertips. Keeping these many hdd means I need to keep checking where my data is and wasting time always.

I was considering p330, as it can support 4nvme and 1 ssd, or 4nvme and 1 hdd with basic mods which i am comfortable in doing.

I am planning to try linux, proxmox, unraid, trunas as of now. Give each about 10days time on my existing spare laptop and then decide what to finally use.

Idle power draw is 40W with 2.5G Network Card, I use P10S-M WS Motherboard with i3-6100 + 16gb + 4gb ram.

Best to tinker first with any extra PC that you have lying around. I also bought Mini PC HP Elite Desk from this forum and installed Proxmox.

I dont have anything spare , but have arranged my old laptop as a spare for timebeing. It has i7 4710 and nvidia 960m. And should be powerful for trial.

Other system available was e5700 with 8gb ram, which didn’t have hdmi , and that is ancient hardware.

Thanks for your suggestion, even I am more inclined to proxmox , but will give all of them a try.

Also thanks for all the containers suggestions, definitely looking for these.

What is your current h/w and idle power draw?

Haha this is too much.

I can’t do this for sure, no more luxury of being a bachelor.

Cant get it approved from my Wife or parents:rofl::rofl:

I have this

Upgraded to 64gb used m.2 for proxmox storage

And sata ssd for monthly backup of containers

Used

2* 1TB Silicon Power SSD (SSd to usb 3.0) in mirror with passthrough to truenas

2*4TB 3.5” surveillance drives(3.5” to usb 3.0) in mirror with passthrough to truenas

Btw I’m Selling off my 3.5” enclosures here in case your interested

This was my set-up 2 weeks ago

Moved to 2 proxmox setup recently

I have been doing my studies and testing on my homelab - networking, virtualisation, deployments and others. Has been of invaluable help in my career.

For example, i dont think that many people knew what was pfsense in 2013 in India. 2015 was deploying pfsense on esxi 5.5

Unraid starter costs $49, though in sale you can get it cheaper. Can use 6 drives in starter.

3070ti should be great, can handle a few GBs per hour easily.

@AlphaSkull - If you have a 14th gen Ultra then you also get AV1 support - so that would be a bonus. Plus Intel implemented a chiplet/tiles design so you can turn down parts of the processor for slightly better power gains.

@Nikzcool - Yes unraid is paid and is great for those who want simplicity. For those who can do a bit of tinkering - there are other options.

If you build a NAS - why would you have to know which data is where. It will make the entire data as one contiguous data partition and you have folders on it.

Rather than the laptop, get an old desktop which has support for 4 HDDs and tinker with it. This is assuming you might be going into IT > SysAdmin roles

Looking at your setup, i get confidence with my initial planned setup using similar machine.

But now thinking of 2 nvme, already have those.

1 large hdd via internal port and 1 hdd via usb.

Will consider it in my trail runs.

Then if I like it, will jump the gun during sale.

yup start small once you feel confident go for it
