Planning upgrades for pc without spending a lot

Hi all,
Looking to upgrade my current setup without spending a bomb. Especially sale offers are coming next month, so I thought I would upgrade one of these. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Current specs:

  • Ryzen 5 3600
  • NVIDIA RTX 3070
  • 16GB (2×8) 3200MHz
  • B450 Tomahawk Max
  • Deepcool AS500 air cooler
  • Cooler Master 650W V2 Gold PSU
  • SSDs are sufficient for my needs

Planned upgrades:

  1. Ryzen 7 5700X (can use the same motherboard)
  2. 32GB (2×16) 3600MHz CL16 (will see if I can get used ones at a reasonable price)
  3. Possibly a 1440p 144Hz monitor (later after few months or next year, nothing urgent, bcz monitors are costing around 20k. Current monitor is 27inch 1080p Samsung curved monitor).

Let me know if this plan makes sense or if there’s anything worth changing. Thanks!

I would probably hold off on the monitor for a bit. Why? Although the 3070 is still more than capable of decent 1440p gaming, the 8 GB of VRAM will cause more headaches than it’s worth.

Save the monitor for now, and put in a little more towards getting a 5700X3D, which will give you a tangible performance boost at 1080p, especially up from that 3600.

I am not sure if my air cooler can handle 5700x3d. Besides the price is almost 9k higher than 5700x as the 5700x3d is retailing around 21-23k.

Which cooler you have?

And it wouldnt really make sense to go to 5700x. Only worthy upgrade is either 5700X3D/5800X3D
In sales you can get 5700X3D around 18K

Also try looking for second hand

Since you are cash strapped, my way of getting bang for buck would be
RAM >>>>> Monitor.
RAM will give you the headroom required to use your system without memory spikes and swaps. Gives you that smooth day-to-day usage.
And using a 1080p monitor in big 2025 is just no. Get yourself a 1440p one, and use DLSS, frame gen, freesync to make your game look smoother. Most competitive games would be able to hit that 140Hz with low details easily, and for those story driven ones use DLSS to reach 60 fps.

Would honestly hold off on upgrading your CPU, as even going up to 5700x wouldn’t give you much of a boost with a 8gb 3070. It’s just wasting money for a maybe 5-10% boost.

I would then look for a GPU upgrade next 12gb min. AMD 6750xt or something.
I don’t think you are CPU bottlenecked right now. CPU upgrade should be last.

Deepcool AS500

Will see if I can get.

This seems easiest upgrade rn. I am having trouble finding 2*16gb kit instead of 2 seperate 16gb rams. Will have to see where I can find corsair or any top rated brands. Haven’t checked offline stores yet.

Really? Damn, I thought I would get atleast 20-30% based on some benchmarks I’ve seen.

  • Your AS500 will handle a 5700X3D just fine
  • You have to see the tradeoff. You’ll be spending at least 15-16K on a new 1440p monitor. Unless you plan on doing a full-blown system upgrade in the not-so-distant future. Stick with your current monitor if you find the visual fidelity still to your liking. In short, a new 1440p monitor now will give you better fidelity, but zero performance uplift (actually worse performance). Even with DLSS at 144p, it’ll chew into that VRAM buffer even more
  • Alternatively, you can also upgrade your RAM now

With a 5700X3D, it will NOT be just a 5-10% boost at 1080p with a 3070. That’s just BS. It’ll be quite a bit higher.

Case in point:

I believe he was talking about 5700X not X3D

Ah, my bad. I missed that part. It only makes sense with the x3d, not the vanilla.

Yeah, I would say just avoid monitor for now. 1080p is still fine, upgrade it last when you have a system capable of doing high refresh rate 1440p.

Upgrade RAM first to 32GB
Dont be stuck on getting 3600 CL16, CL18 will be fine as well, there will be minimal performance gap between them
And then wait for CPU deals or 2nd hand offer and get a 5700X3D or 5800X3D

And yes, your cooler will be enough for these

He literally has a GPU upgrade in that video.
Its a 4060ti rather than a 3060. Ofcousre there will be a 50% gain.

OP is not looking to buy a GPU.

You’re missing the point, a 4060TI is around 15% slower than a 3070. Do the math. Even accounting for the difference, it’ll still be a decent boost at 1080p. That’s just how it is. The point is that a 5700X3D will serve as a better performance upgrade in his current scenario. I’m aware he isn’t looking to buy a GPU. It’s to show how the CPU is an upgrade.

If you do upgrade these videos maybe useful.

R5 3600 VS 5700X and 5800X with a RTX 3070

Note with ZEN 3 having a Dual Rank setup 16GBX2 or 8GBX4 will give you better FPS
and 1% lows in most games.

You should be able to make your own decision after watching these two videos if upgrading it worth it or not. Don’t let peoples person opinions influence your buying decision.

I agree with monitor suggestion. I made a mistake of buying 27inch 1080p instead of 24inch. I know 3070 can handle some games at 1440p, still playing at 1080p is better as it seems more ‘future proof’ with 1080p atleast for a few years. But now going back to 24 inch would be weird. Hence instead of all this confusion, and with ur suggestions, I might have to ignore monitor for now.

RAM upgrade seems easier option right now. I would appreciate if any of you can give me links to a better RAM kit of 2x16gb. There are so many variants with minute hidden details, that I feel I might miss them and buy the wrong one.

Regarding CPU- I will have to shell out 23k compared for 5700x3d while 5700x is 13k. This huge price diff is only the reason, I was not ready to decide. Will see if there are any good discounts during this sale for 5700x3d.
All of this considering that, we are not upgrading mobo for now and keeping the same b450.

MD has the 5700X3D for 21K. With an SBI cashback CC, you can get it for around 17-18K. Don’t know if it’ll work on that site, though. @OMEGA44-XT may know better

Otherwise, the RAM upgrade is also sound :orangutan:

On amazon too it seems to have come for 19k in last sale. Add in card discounts and it might come around 17-18k. But on amazon it is “Non Returnable” though, means no replacement.

May as well stick to MD, if you plan to get it, and if it accepts SBI CC cashback. At least you know you’ll 100% get a genuine product.

Ask MD computers by calling them about stock details before ordering and also ask for 5800x3d pricing as well.
Inform about both CPU prices here so that others will have a idea. Okay.
