i want to install a player for my suse linux pro 9.2 that is capable of playing avi files,xvid,divx files.I tried installing vlc player it did not work out.
Pls suggest some other player for playing divx,xvid, etc files
MPlayer … it has a very good collection of codecs.
you can also Google and install individual codecs if the player doesn’t have support…
eg.: DivX for Linux

There is a SUSE link somewhere.
The recommended way to install MPlayer is through source though, so when you get more comfortable with linux, try that out 
or go to freshrpms.net
now quite comfortable with linux will try installing through the source only.
