[Question] DHL India charges for incoming international shipping.

I have a shipment coming from China (Alibaba). What are these charges apart from import duty and taxes? I would like to know if other have paid these. I have gone through the basic explanation for these, but they still seems excessive for something “costing” rs 5000.

I have bought items upto Rs 2k-3k from China many times, never had to pay any of these charges before. The delivers for those were made by DTDC and India post though.

Last month I purchased from Alibaba and it was around 36$ so I paid around 2k custom duty.

Which courier?

Doesn’t matter what country it comes from. Items shipped via FedEx and DHL will cost a lot in the name of disbursement fee and IGST.

Here’s a break up of an item costing 10k is costlier by 50%.

What do you get Electronics? Last time with Fedex I charge upto 30% for import.

Achhe din charges bhai. Pay them.

Yes, Electronics.

So no escaping this scam (in all but name). Surprisingly, I have only received an SMS with link and no calls from them. What do they usually do to get you to pay them? Withholding shipment I guess, but I am going to wait for a day or two.

Tried to source automatic watches. Luckily it was still cheaper than buying locally.

They would reach you via phone and email. I pay these charges online and submit KYC documents. They do provide the option of paying offline at the time of delivery. You need to inform them when they follow up via phone.

They withhold when KYC documents has a mismatch with the name or address you provide.

The KYC thing is another cherry on top. Luckily, they accepted the address proof even though pincode was of different area (The one that I shared with seller works better for deliveries). I suppose they will call me tomorrow.

I have ordered a lot of stuff costing not more than 50-60 usd from sites based in US and they used both DHL and FedEx. I had to never pay any customs or exta charge. I just keep my purchase below 50usd.

Sites based in USA and below 50$, both of these are not applicable here but something to keep in mind.

Adding this example about FedEx here as well. Charges of Rs. 1394.00 on on product with cost of RS 1056.82.

DHL worldwide is chor.

I ordered sleeping bag $350 dollar paid Rs 10k customs in Middle East.( Not even in India).

They put some credit allocation charge plus Storage charge too .

Because otherwise ordering stuffs from USA is only 17% but they added all the stupid charges to make me pay almost 40% of the item cost.

I also had similar charges (around Rs.2400) when I was importing Rs.1800 electronic item from China (using Alibaba). I was not aware of the charges and abandoned the parcel.

So you lost Rs. 1800 ?

Yes. I placed another order, which shipped via Yanwen and it didn’t cost any custom duty.

I bought an item from Ebay Japan. The list price was about INR 5600. After adding around 40% Customs duty (electronic item) and INR 500 duty forwarding fee, the total came around INR 8000.

Still not bad.
We were send children’s gift ( baba cloth) from Switzerland worth about 60 francs.

Indian customs charged us about 5500 something iirc.

It was during Covid times.
