RayTracing and 48XX cards

48XX cards are turning into a sort of wonder-chip. A solution to age-old GPU woes ^o

TG Daily - Watch out, Larrabee: Radeon 4800 supports a 100% ray-traced pipeline using DirectX 9

does any one know whether they have used RT for the ruby demo which is supposed to run real time on a 4870CF setup at 720p?

Just. WOW.

I would love the see the face on nVidia guys, who not so long ago commented that ATi doesn’t know anything about designing next generation graphic chip. I bet that guy understood how foot in mouth tastes. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

i guess u have missed the last part of the article..which says RT can be implemented on 8800 series and above..but a bit more work for the coders as the 8 series doesnot support tessellation

No, I didn’t miss…

I’m not saying that nVidia chips are useless. It’s just that, shortly after nVidia started trash talking Intel… some of the guys from nvidia went after trash-talking about ATi. David Kirk and Roy Taylor to be specific. While the world was wondering about nVidia’s sudden surge of arrogance, thinking that nVidia might be really holding a wonder-chip in their hand (GT200).

But now after all said and done. ATi’s rather less hyped RV770, proved to be pain in the ass for all that engineering marvel and 1.4 billion transistors on GT200. And since the launch of 4850 and 4870, each passing day we are getting one after another good news/rumor about RV770… such as physic acceleration (Physx or Havok), GPU transcoding (Cyberlink PowerDirector) and now dedicated Raytracing pipeline. In fact, the above mentioned news also shows that ATi’s tessellation engine is not just marketing gimmick.

Makes you wonder, who really made the wonder chip in the end.

On the other note… there is still one more thing remains to be seen. R700 (4870x2). It will be fun to see if two RV770 with new generation bridge, bring some good scaling in crossfire-on-board, beyond software limitation.

+1 to iGO
I wonder,what is not missng in HD4800.
Tesselation
Ray Tracing
7.1 Ch HD Audio + DTS, Dolby
Transcoding capabilities
Global illumination engine
Dx 10.1
Surely a big slap on NV face..
Yes, Ruby demo is complete inovation of ray & tesselation.

agree completely..
success took its tool on nvidia..they have been on the top since there 6 series (4 yrs)..its good they that they have been beaten convincingly atleast once (assuming 4870x2 will decimate the GTX280 at a lower price point).

once again NV should stop bashing other ppl’s tech and start concentrating on there own.

Well Nvidia wasn’t the best with 7 series either, 1900xt was a superb card at that time, I reckon a little better than the 7900gtx!

Yeh. I mean they were so completely blind with GT200 marvel, that they didn’t expect DAAMIT to pull something like this. They probably thought that RV770 is going to be nothing more than slight improvement over RV670. Specially, with ATi’s new direction of making prize-performance balanced product. They thought that ATi has no answer to nVidia’s high performance parts, that why they are concentrating only on mainstream part.

But overconfidence never did anyone good in long run, did it?

The best thought I had was when nVidia pulled 9800GTX+, as 4850 was starting it’s success run… and I just thought, If that’s what nVidia is doing to counter 4850 then what’s next for 4870? GTX++ ? :face_with_tongue:

LOL, that was funny!
