Short Review: Anker 1383 87W / 72 Wh Power Bank

I had picked it up for 4.5k during the recent sale to primarily use with the ROG Ally after deciding to not go ahead with a battery upgrade kit. Usually test things after purchase, so thought I will click some pics to share the same.

As a power source, it is able to output at 65W, so the Ally can work in 30W Turbo mode.

It supports passthrough with not much loss, but the power difference is enough to drop the Ally to the 25W mode. Don’t really have a use for this mode as I would either use it from the power supply directly or the power bank, not both.

It starts charging low power devices when connected, but shuts off after about a minute. So the power button has to be double-pressed which activates the low power mode which then works fine.

Didn’t specifically record the full charging time yet, but it pulls in 65W when charging even to a high percentage, before levelling off to a lower wattage.

If you consider the weight alone, it is substantial, but then the Anker products are much better built when compared to something coming from the likes of Xiaomi.

However, it fits fine within a generic case Ally along with a USB-C charger.

Overall, I would recommend it for the sale price considering its versatility.

Thanks for the review. I’m curious about the cable with the display and power-reading hub thingy you got there. Mind sharing links and how much they cost?

Has been my experience as well with Anker products but I’ve noticed a trend with fire hazards and recalls: Anker just recalled 5 more power banks – here’s which ones and how to get a free replacement | TechRadar — not sure if they still have any good support system in India.

Had picked them up from AliExpress in the past. Have to check the exact links, which might not even exist now, but would be easy to find out on AliExpress.

They did tie up with a local partner and announced the official India launch previously.

Also has India listed as a dedicated country.

Even before this, I had an issue with an Eufy product and had to ship it to Chennai. Of course, back then, after the product went out of warranty, they didn’t even have the tools to fix it. Not sure if that has changed, but expect good support under warranty.

Hey, I was recently looking into getting one of these power banks too but decided to wait it out and just get a battery kit instead later. May I know why you decided against it?

Also, the usb port of the power bank supports 65w charging too right?

Just don’t want the added weight in hand all the time. Feels more convenient to have the power bank lying around the table, sofa, bed or even the pocket instead. Also, it is more versatile in terms of being able to use it to charge nearly all the other devices.

The USB-C port also supports 65W output. Here are the specs for reference.

I haven’t read enough into why these don’t work with mac mini M4 but I wish there was a portable solution for mac m4 as well

Nice Review. Thanks for sharing.

I like Anker products built quality and design but have had bad experience with their power banks. They get swollen much earlier in their life.

I hope this does not happen for you and maybe i got poor product twice in a row.

Usually though Amazon USA reviews are mixed bag too when it comes to Anker prodict sighting same issue.

Yeah, they had a product recall affecting multiple products, though this one is not in the list. But then, I generally used Mi power banks for the past few years and they would always swell up in 6-12 months, so guess it just depends on the operating frequency and conditions.

Another point which I forgot to mention in my earlier reply is that the 74Wh and 80Wh batteries seem to be from those alphabet-soup companies, so not sure how well they will last. Think Jsaux is the only semi-known company that makes the battery kits that top out at 65Wh. Moreover, from what I read, all those no-name batteries usually don’t calibrate with Windows and shut down randomly with anywhere between 0-20% battery life remaining.

This seems to be a more reliable solution, but time will tell.

Why would you expect to power a Mac Mini with a power bank? I’m no electrical dude but doesn’t Mac Mini M4 first of all use a proprietary power connector? Besides, normal/peak requirements might be much higher than what most power banks would support.

I understand they are not designed to.
They are designed for continuous operation. The teardown and power supply components are designed uniquely.

Didn’t mean they have to be limited to.. you just have to use for imagination for your use case.

They are desktop pc, but these are so compact and efficient.

there are Ryzen mini PCs with usb c pd that can be run by top class power banks.

Was looking for a powerbank that could charge laptops too. Might give this a look

Earlier Anker products were not easily available here other than cables so I stopped looking at them as a brand for power banks.

A 20k mah Ravpower at 7.5k was the last decent powerbank I got many years ago. Since then its been generics with a power gauge display. That’s very useful to know at a glance from across the room whether a powerbank is full.

This takes just 1.5h to charge

Should work well with the 100W power adapter my HP Spectre came with

Seems funny to be looking at Anker powerbanks given the recent recalls but they are for older products going by how low the power output is.

The powerbank I’d been using since was called Romoss. Thought they were generic but turns out they were a top selling brand in China. Picked up a pair just before the lockdown because they had those digital gauge displays

I said were because along with Anker their powerbanks faced a recall. A number of accidents happened and the chinese air regulator banned all powerbanks from flying without this CCC Chinese certification. Well, this brand was unable to satisfy that requirement and was nearly finished.

For me its the other way around.

2 Anker Power bank…one got swollen much earlier in its life cycle ( i say within 1 year that too with not much used) others button gets stuck.

where as Xiamoi Mi power bank - 10,000 mah one working since 5 years and more( ofcourse not as efficient but works perfectly fine) and 20k mah one still working since 3-4 years.

Now I am using Urbn power bank 22.5 Wh. 20k mah, Worked perfectly fine at -28degrees Celisus in Russia. Ofcourse there was little something I had to do to keep it warm.

still very new just bought it before going to Russia. So lets see how long it lasts.

Not had a powerbank swell on me as yet. Because all of them have had 18650 cells inside.

These Ankers must have LiPo packs in them. Supposed to be safer as in they just smoke slowly instead of exploding.

Swelling might be due to ‘overcharging’.

By that I mean the powerbank doesn’t stop drawing power when the gauge shows 100. It will still continue so it might be charging them to higher than 4.2V. This gives a little more capacity but it also shortens the life.

Ideally there would be a way to stop charging at say 80 or 90% but Anker refuses to provide that feature

The other model I’m also tempted to get is the 10,000 mah model. Portable and light enough on the go.

I think all power banks have cutoff protection for overcharging. The main issue is heat though.

I remember that when I first had a power bank, I covered it in an attractive silicone case because it looked good and protected it from scratches. However, the power bank swelled within half a year. I took the cover off and it actually flattened after that and worked for a couple of years.

Cheaper power banks usually cheap out on the power circuitry and heat dissipation, which impacts the life of the device, even if they use decent cells.

That is a good point.
But just to make clear my Anker powerbank did not had sleeves.

I don’t know what caused it.
Like @blr_p pointed could be overcharging but then don’t these expensive powerbanks comes with protection against that when much lesser powerbanks these comes with it.

Never had that issue with other powerbanks.
Except Ambrane ones but those were anyways too cheap 300-500 ones. I wasn’t expecting much out of them.

But when I pay 3k-4k for powerbank I except it to last for a long time.

Parcel arrived

Curious Anker ships powerbanks at such a low power level.

25% presumably

Is that the ideal level they should be stored at long term if not used

The smaller one showed 25% then suddenly dropped to 0%. The import date is Aug 2024

The bigger one was imported May 2025 so held on to its charge.

Off to the charger they go. Let’s see how quickly they too up

Mine was exactly at 20%. I had seen some reviews where it was again at 20%. I think the normal recommendation is to keep it at 40% for short term storage, probably a bit lesser for longer term storage.

When I hooked the A1259 up, it jumped back to 25% and started charging from there.

Glad to see it taking in a full 30W. Took a couple of minutes to negotiate that rate

Just over an hour to charge up :slightly_smiling_face:

This from a 100W laptop charger.

The real surprise will be to see similar charge time with the A1383.

Normally for a 20,000 mah powerbank that’s a 5h+ wait with 20W going in
