My RX 470 is losing power within a minute of running. Most probably repairable but most technicians I’ve talked to say they have little experience with AMD and donor parts availability will be a challenge as well. After a week of holidays here in Kolkata, they will finally open tomorrow but here’s the main thing…
There’s an ASrock Challanger RX 7600 for 20k in Flipkart and coincidentally I’ve just saved 20k from my internship.
I cannot decide whether to get my RX 470 fixed with low chances or buy a new GPU. Was considering RX 9060 XT 16GB but that’s almost 40k and I barely play any games anymore due to work, I still play Counter Strike and recently started playing R6 with friends along with older games from my library, RX 470 handles the e-sports one at or above 200FPS, story games at above 60 FPS (don’t have any games released since 2020), so 9060 XT seems too overkill. FYI I have Ryzen 5 3600 on B450 (PCIe 3.0).
I was looking at used RTX 3060 but they cost above 16k and at that price RX 7600 makes more sense, for 3k more I can get a new card with warranty and newer encoders (being a gen newer than 3060). But I’m skeptical about ASrock and their older Challanger cards, cooler design seems less optimized and material quality also seems inferior (which might rust I mean), my 9 year old Sapphire card is all metal with 0 rust and shiny as new so my perception might be biased (seen all of my friend’s cards rust and dust within couple of years). I can also save up for 9060XT but would have to wait till December or January at least (I’m skeptical of EMI).
The real dilemma is the Flipkart sale is ending today and I can only submit my card for repairs tomorrow since they were closed for the entire duration of sale, it also has the success of repairs in question.
Since you don’t need the performance, you can go cheaper too and look at 6600 / 5600xt / 3050/2060 and the like. New ones ofc gets warranty and will likely last more.
yes all depends on price. 3050 was usually overpriced, dunno about used market.
6000 and 7000 series had a major disadvantage with FSR 3 which is terrible vs DLSS. But recently we have mods available that allow FSR 4 on both with good enough performance, so that factor is almost gone now.
Still, 3060 12gb is a well rounded gpu. Can go for it or 6600xt.
For cpu bound multiplayer games, i have heard that amd is better as their driver overhead is lower. + amd has very good linux support.
Have you tried any shops? First identify the problem, look at the windows event viewer for any clues. I think you should have kept your friend’s rx 580 4gb it has flaws but okay for your use case.
What I’ve loosely identified (guess based on similar problems online) is the GPU is failing to maintain input voltage and shutting itself off. So could be fixable.
I almost bought the RX 580 for myself but got a good offer and friend needed the money to buy some trekking gear so all worked out for them. My visit to repair shop was actually scheduled but they decided they’ll close for Durga Puja days earlier so “my timings and plans” fell through.
Anyways, it’s about time to let this good boy rest, if it gets fixed I’ll continue till it completes exact 10 years and then retire it (this was the original plan).
As the owner for a 6600XT who upgraded from 1080Ti I can vouch for the CPU driver overhead part. especially with my system with an old CPU. I recently found a used RX 6700 10gb and will be upgrading. I will look to sell 6600XT post 16th oct and here are all the details if you want to look: https://imgur.com/a/sff-itx-gaming-pc-amd-6600xt-8gb-super-slim-10-ltr-e56yxRR
But you should be able to find several 6000 series amd gpus used. I often see 6700XTs going at 20k. The one con of 6600XT are its 8 lanes.
