This processor along with a DDR (256MB) setup was being used by the parents of a friend. Usage is restricted to only MS Office, listening to songs and internet browsing.
Now the Mobo is partially dead, and its time to change and they dont want to spend too much on the new parts as they were pretty satisfied with what they had before.
So i managed to source a Transcend 1GB DDR2 stick and a year old VIP Gold 400W PSU. Now please suggest me an appropriate mobo for this. All i know is that the proccy is from the LGA775 family, but am confused as for which mobo i should suggest them. Rest of the components (HDD, DVD-RW, Monitor) will be carried over from the old system.
Would prefer to buy a used one to keep the cost as low as possible.
How old is the system is it a LGA based package or the older M478 based package? You need to specify that then if it is a a M478 BGA package then new system is what I’ll recommend. I hope this is clearer.
How do you know it is LGA 775 have you seen it with your eyes if it is standard LGA 775 then you can buy any G41 based motherboards which are a dime a dozen these days.
P4 1.6GHz is bound to be a Socket 478 proccy. It cant be a prescot, so no chance of LGA775.
The slowest LGA 775 P4 was 2.6GHz.
So forget about getting a board based on 845 or 865 chipset.
Get a new PC based on Intel Atom or AMD Sempron…
I thought the Celeron D series and the Intel Pentium Dual Core range had models which were clocked so low and OP seems to be able to validate it, so either he is wrong or I assumed :ashamed:
^^^ Intel Celeron D and Dual Core series were in no way linked to the P4 series. Their architecture was diff. And so was their fabrication.
I am damn sure the proccy that he mis talking bout is a Socket 478 proccy, provided that its a P4 1.6GHz and not a Intel Dual Core.
@ALPHA17, I called my friend up and asked him the above and he too got confused, i asked here believing him when he said its a 775 socket :ashamed:. So went over to his place to check it out myself and lo… its indeed a P4 478 mPGA 2.4 GHz running on a Gigabyte i845G chipset board (circa 2004).
You are spot on Hellgate :), it wasnt a Prescott core. Its most prolly a Williamette or Northwood one and yes running on a 845 chipset. I duly told them not to bother with it anymore thereafter and have suggested a cheap upgrade.
I was wrong there. Should have validated myself about the Socket type :(. You were right on that.
There is another correction to the OP, and that is its a 2.4GHz P4 and not 1.6GHz, and certainly not an Intel Dual Core .
Thank you ALPHA17 and hellgate for your valuable inputs
If you are tight on budget then get a AMD Sempron 145(2.8GHz, 1 Core, AM3) - 1.5k + Asus M2N68-AM PLUS - 2.1k (DDR2 mobo). Else you can look for a 2nd hand deal for the same.
Not worth trying to get mobo for that processor IMO. Sempron is much better.
@OP, dont buy Zebby mobos. They are not good at all and ASS is pretty bad.
You wud be better off with a Sempron/Atom based system or a sencond hand one from TE market.
What is the model number, I think a G31 board will be able to accomadate it :), check out the Member’s Market for deals preferent board will be a 945G or 965 chipset based board (these will be hard to find). Ironical don’t you think that know AMD has released Phenom IIx4 945/ 965/ 975 processors.
I mean that a G31 based motherboard should be able to handle your Presscot but might’ve issues (not sure, I migrated to AMD after my Pentium D was left at home). But the best boards to get for your processor will be older INTEL 945G or 965 chipset based motherboards, you might get them in the Member’s Market :). Hope this clarifies my complex babble.
