I’ve got a Tata sky Binge+ android tv box, the advantage is it bundles TV channels and the Android TV app experience, which is somehow a bit simple for mum to use, but it is excruciatingly slow, I’ve checked and this is the Binge+ model, their site doesn’t have any newer / faster box, how do they continue to offer such a subpar product in 2025?! Are there any alternatives? The TV itself is non-smart so I need a box, but something that integrates tv channels.
The other option was Jio or Airtel but I’m not sure how good they are, or if they have the integrations well enough with Android TV and regular channels.
DTH is on progress to a slow death. Best is to make your parents accustomed to using OTTs and digital equivalents. Done this 2 years back at our place. Consider this to be an upskilling
Airtel IPTV is one of the best alternatives - but I have not used it.
Tata sky recording boxes used to be the best. Forgot what it was called. It had composite video, component video, hdmi, coax audio, optical audio, universal remote, 12v 4a adaptor, ethernet, usb wifi, 720p/1080i dolby digital and a 3.5 500gb wd green hard drive for recording. That one box took care of everyone’s needs.
Have 2 at home collecting dust. Pulled out the hard drives. Will try to use the adaptors somewhere else.
Had subscribed to tata sky the month they started HD content/channels and added more boxes quickly thereafter. Was very happy with it.
Shifted to ott when they changed to pay per channel and my all channel annual plan + 3 addons ran out. It was too complicated for me then combined with the benefits of ott. Recently removed all tata sky wiring, the dish s still remain in bad shape.
Used to have 3 different service providers (vodafone, tata sky, excitel). Now it’s just airtel.
I’m in the same dilemma with airtel black now. Have 200mb broadband + 4 mobile plan. Wanted to add IPTV for my mom at a small monthly bump. She doesn’t need it, more that I can add easily. Have very good wifi coverage and ethernet. Currently using Vu premium 4k 55 inch android 9, 3/4 years old for ott/smart. Will eventually have to upgrade to a newer box/stick. Will only add airtel iptv box if the experience is better. Was thinking it will be a bigger hassle than it’s worth and just get a new/latest fire stick when the time comes.
Yeaa Tata play binge+ is dogpoo. I wanted to get them used to OTT and they do, but they still wanna see their news channels or religious channels, those aren’t easy enough to replicate on OTT sadly. Hence locked into a bs contract with tata sky / doesntplay dontbinge minus.
Wondering if any Jio TV users here, is their box better, ease of use?
I’m using tatasky sth with their b*shit binge box which is nothing but win11 running on a P2 era processor. I regret upgrading to binge box as its slow as hell and that got nothing to do with your smart tv as I have an android tv. The sync between tv and stb is also a mismatch type and if you want to watch tatasky you have to actually power on both the tv and stb at elast 15-20 min in advance to be able to operate the stb because it keeps syncing every app or god knows what with the crap tata server. All of a sudden it will switch back to my tvs patchwall screen.
Their UI is so bloaty with all bloatware, I wish I could root it and install a vanilla os with OTT apps of my choice.
Anyways, the config of these stbs are nothing but a joke- 1gb ram 1gb rom and running android 11/12. In which era are they living only they know. The min. criteria should be 4+4gb at least in this era.
The old tata stb (non-binge) was great is all I could say.
