Need some recommendations on some truly scary Horror movies.
I need some great build-up and not just random jumpscares.
Some of the movies I loved are:
- The Autopsy of Jane Doe
- Sinister
- The Descent
- Hereditary
- It Follows
- Huesera

Se7en was a thriller, not really a horror, but a must watch!
Same with Silence of the lambs.
The ring or ringu if you wanna watch the original japanese one
Zodiac (a thriller but still fits I would say)
Apart from these watch the classics like the thing, evil dead, poltergeist, the exorcist and stuff.
Also different people get scared by different stuff. So I would suggest finding out what aspect is it you get scared of and trying to find movies based on that
If you like atmospheric horror without jump scares, watch The Witch and Nosferatu both by Eggers.
If you like found footage movies, watch the spanish movie Rec.
If you like korean thrillers centred on demons, watch The Wailing and Exhuma.
If you like movies centred on human despair and cruelty, watch Martyrs.
For movies that are claustrophobic and based on the feeling of being trapped, watch The Descent and Get Out.
For sci fi horror, I suggest Event Horizon.
This looks interesting. I mostly stick with English horror movies. Never tried Korean films
Let the right one in 2008 wala.
A must watch.
Oh dear! You are missing out on a great deal of world cinema. I have been watching these for a long time now. UTV had a channel “World Movies” and I still remember watching movies then.
brought Korean movies into trend just before COVID but there’s some great movies out there which don’t make it to the Oscar awards.
Not horror. But a good movie
Define horror?
Because for me it’s Definitely a horror movie and a fantastic movie. Watched it 3 times already over many years.
There are enough scenes to keep you on edge .
Martyrs
Evil Dead (2013)
120 days of sodom (Haven’t seen this, but I think it’s more likely a torture type of story rather than horror)
The Hills Have Eyes
Saw and Hostel series. I couldn’t watch either as I found these too scary.
The horror genre is a category of literature, film, and art designed to evoke fear, dread, terror, and disgust, aiming to shock or frighten the audience.
All these are there in that movie. So it is well under horror movie.
That is a horror movie but not in the sense you expect. This is one of the most well known controversial movies to be made because of extreme/graphic sex/fetish scenes (just check its wiki page).
Good movie, similar one in recent times would be Pandorum (2009).
Pandorum had a really nice twist.
Yeah, they don’t make movies/twists like that anymore in Hollywood.
Not really a horror genre but if you want goofy scary movie - Scream series.
Before I Wake 2016 (PG)
The Black Phone 2021 (R)
Sinners 2025 (R)
The Pope’s Exorcist 2023 (R)
+1 for Event Horizon
