Oh wow, how is this even allowed in this green walled garden?

Safari has had extensions for a while now. I’ve been using AdGuard till now.

Now I can live in Safari.

Do they say, does it block YT ads?

I’m getting popup ads in brave browser on ipad. Waiting for a good browser with ubo support

Safari had quite a few good ad-blockers since they launched extensions. Could’ve switched even before if this was the limitation.

Haven’t tried it, I use YT Premium. But AFAIK, only UBO on Firefox is best capable to adapt to YT’s changes to combat ad-blockers.

Any reason why you use Brave on iPadOS? AFAIK, all of them are Webkit (Safari’s underlying rendering engine) wrappers. I’m only aware of Orion being the other browser which is trying to make existing Firefox/Chrome extensions work but this is a hit or miss in my experience.

No reason at all. Just need a reliable browser and my default browser everywhere else is Firefox. I thought I can get ad-free experience with brave. Did not try orion yet. Does it block ads completely?

Largely it’s because of Apple’s own restrictions. Found this comment from Brave team on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/brave_browser/comments/1kgrudw/comment/mrbxot1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Nope, which is why I said hit or miss. It’s still an experimental browser so I wouldn’t recommend it for daily driving. Unfortunately, until Apple lets the reins loose, I doubt we’ll see much browser innovation in iOS.

So, there is no point in running brave for adblocking. Is there any workaround?

Yes, just use Safari and your ad-blocker of choice . uBlock Origin Lite now that this is an option. You don’t get any other benefits unless you sync your data/history with Brave/Chrome/Firefox etc.

Safari is sluggish on my old ipad. Opens popup tabs with questionable gifs in the background.

I recently found a solution to tackle popup ads in Safari but it restricts all popups. Javascript popups don’t work at all.

Settings-Safari-Advanced-Feature Flag-Verify window.open user gesture (turn it on)

Let me try it

Try with an ad-blocker and see. I haven’t encountered popups at all for day-to-day browsing needs and actually, Safari is a bit more aggressive last I checked than other browsers on this front. It blocks almost all popups for me including sometimes, the legit ones like for payment. I have to click the little icon and allow for things to progress. Hope you’re on the latest stable iPadOS version.

For shadier sites though, I use Firefox Focus + ProtonVPN. It’s like “incognito mode” always so I don’t need to bother with anything else. Doesn’t have multiple tabs either. Orion also works for these use cases and with uBlock Origin, might be bit more effective.

I use a movie streaming site to watch movies. That produces a lot of popups. Never tried extensions on safari though. Hope it fixes the problem alongwith the flag

I’d suggest using Firefox Focus/Orion + VPN for those kinds of purposes and configure settings if using Orion to not keep history and stuff. I don’t like to mix my business on the high seas with my “acha bacha” needs (:
