Weird Nvme ssd issue

System specs:

RYZEN 5 5600X/ Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WI-FI mobo/ 32gb ddr4 gskill

Storage: HDDS- 1TB WD/ 2*3 500GB Seagate

SSD: Intel Sata SSD 400GB Boot drive and NVME Samsung 980 1TB.

Issue:

Fea weeks ago Iw as copying data from my phone on to the NVME Samsung 980 1TB ssd and all of a sudden encountered a few random errors:

There was no system freeze or bsods or even a cm of other operational interruptions.

I obviously got panicked as I feared the ssd was dead but Samsung Magician showed all good health which I keep monitoring regularly for my both SSDs and HDDS.

I did a reboot and the ssd was showing again with all data intact.

I again connected my phone and this time the pending data got copied without errors.

Well, today as well similar incident happened but this time I wasnt copying anything but simply started my computer and the drive vanished in front of my like some magic or a movie.

This time in disk manager it wasnt showing the drive at all even after re scanning for the disks. Again rebooted and the ssd was back as if nothing happened.

Scavenged the event viewer and here are the results:

Now, the above errors indicate corruption and hardware failure but no such corruption afaik on any file stored on this disk/drives. Nor I’m aware of any such hw failure else it would had definitely caused bsods and random freeze!

Nor I have to do anything with the RAID as raid isn’t active/was never active and is disabled in the bios. Nor there was any bios reset performed automatically by the system else the system indicates/warns during boot-up if failed safe defaults do get loaded.

** If this counts- this very nvme is only used for storing phone media backups - Pics/vids before I move them to external storages for 3 level backups.

Not sure why this behavior is happening only to this nvme ssd and no on the intel ssd nor on wd and segate sata drives.

What are the results?

These same things were happening with my patriot ssd before it died suddenly one day. Health still showed 100%.

Is the pc running windows 11 24H2? If yes then you might be hit by the random ssd destroying bug which some users reported a few months back. I would suggest to backup all the important data on this ssd & then check for any firmware update available in samsung magician & update it if available.

SSDs always die suddenly because unlike hdd they don’t have any mechanical parts which can display degrading condition in S.M.A.R.T. parameters.

Updated my main post.. caught in office work so forgot to add.

I can easily go through goodly for the event errors but want to know from people around if they had encountered near similar issues with their storages esp. nvme and how was it tackled and resolved for good aka permanently!

I had the timestamp and ran through the first incident occurrence event logs and they too point to the exact same errors as today with a new one back then with a battery of disk errors amounting to 15865 in continuity..

Check if your drive has media and data integrity errors in crystaldisk info. The message you got about error in paging operation matches what I faced on my ssd.

Nope..

Try using the SSD elsewhere or using a different SSD in the same slot to see if it’s the board or the SSD, which is problematic.

Your board has two M2 slots so try swapping the slot.

I will lose 2 sata port if I use the secondary nvme slot. And this issues isnt a daily one. It happened on 5th oct and then today, in fact today without any activity on that disk.

Not sure if its some driver issue or what.

It is likely some weird drive issue. I used to have a NVMe drive which disappear from pc after 1-2 months on a regular basis & when it happened only way is to turn off the pc, uninstall & reinstall the NVMe drive in m.2 slot & it started working as usual. This went on for 2-3 years.

Where did you buy this ssd from? I avoid cheap deals for exactly such potential issues because I suspect faulty units with modified firmware that reports 100% health.

Also did you flush windows write cache aka eject option in task bar system tray before unplugging the phone?

Try using an external enclosure to limit the potential case of the nvme connector issue on your motherboard.

Clean the connectors of the nvme ssd either with isopropyl alcohol preferably 99% or if not possible use distilled water.

I am assuming this would be related to the firmware going bad which in turn will screw up with the ssd nand.

If it can be rma’ed do that and avoid the hassle.

But @TechnologyHell sold me a good drive which I bought as open box item.

If OP has bought from him then he can ask for his help in getting it RMAed and get a new drive.

Just recently my Liteon m.2 ssd was doing the same thing before it died. I tried it on different systems using an enclosure too.

I have same issue with my sandisk ssd :frowning:

Are these issues because of last months Windows 11 update?

Not in my case. Not using Win 11 in any of my systems.
