A recently reported vulnerability in WhatsApp can allow malicious media files to propagate through group chats and potentially compromise devices. According to Malwarebytes researchers, crafted media files such as specially formatted videos or images can exploit a flaw in how WhatsApp processes incoming files, leading to unexpected behavior on the recipient’s device.
The issue isn’t limited to one platform; both mobile and desktop versions of WhatsApp are affected if the malicious file is opened.
WhatsApp has been notified of the bug, and users are advised to avoid opening media from untrusted chats and keep their apps updated once a patch is released.
