The BenQ DW1650 is also a solid drive… it served me well for close to a year, and I finally retired it to another PC and got the LG H42N (1.9k in Blore). Right now if you ask anyone which DVDRW, you’d only hear H42N
Thats a very important point when buying a dvd writer… each specific model have their pros and cons… as for me im using a asus 1608p3s flashed to pio 111l… one of the best drives i’ve ever used.
Some people are having serious issues with the H42N.
DVD reading probs galore while the same DVDs run smooth on the Sony or liteON.
Try and get the Sony Sata 170S something for about 1900 or lower or the LiteON 20x 20A1P from the newer gen.
But heard that the Sony SATA one has a bullet fast tray- samsung make maybe.
From the older lot, u might find the BenQ 1650 or 1655 retailing cheap- say 1700-1800 bucks, the Asus 1608p3 whic is a lil pricier.
for me its to write dvd’-rs of stuff i want to keep.
so..stuff i want to keep i write to dvd-r.
to know that stuff will be ok you need scanning.
therfore i would not consider a drive that did not have good scanning.
and your choice here is a lite-on only, the benqs 1650 are unfortunately not there anymore. If you already have a reliable scanner…
…then, the LG is a fine buy, but if you have just the 1 writer my vote goes for one that can scan.
There are enough shit brand dvd-r’s out there, that if you dont have a scanner, you can not be certain that your data will be available in the future. So going for the cheapest media will cost you more in the long run, that is if whats written matters at all.
Which kinda kills the reason for writing to dvd-r, in the first place, doesn’t it
