So Bazzite is another Linux Distro right?
yeah, its based on some version of fedora but should make things simpler for new user, esp for gamers. I have never used it, but heard plenty of praise. See above video, you have a windows guy installing linux and using to play games from steam and other stores.
The linux community is confusing you dont you think so
yes man it is. I am a super noob regarding linux.
Will my Logitech Pebble 2 combo work without drivers on Bazzite along with my MSI B650M Gaming wifi drivers?
Best is to not use specialised distro and stick with true and tested ones.
Kubuntu
Linux Mint
OpenSUSE
etc.
As others said, can always add a different desktop environment to test out.
I haven’t done a fresh install of my Debian Desktop since Debian 10 back in 2019. If upgrades are proper and you don’t add unnecessary/unmaintained software repositories then everything will be fine.
Only recently got Plasma 6.4 after Debian 13 and it’s so nice I’m pretty sure even an average user with zero Linux experience can be comfortable with it after a few minutes clicking things.
So stick to a known, maintained distro please. Check the distro community forums first.
See the confusion continues…
Long time Linux user here. I’ve used linux for everything and especially gaming for years.
I would recommend Bazzite with KDE desktop enviornment for new users. Why Bazzite?
It is Fedora based so all things internally is industry standard with one of the widest support for software, yes one can compile or run any software on any distro or linux variant but it takes workaround but some closed source software like Davinci Resolve and proprietary AMD drivers are made for RedHat operating systems and Fedora is a RedHat OS.
You’ll be prompted to select Nvidia or AMD drivers before downloading so you don’t have to bang your head against the Nvidia GPU drivers.
You’ll face no trouble gaming on it. It is designed with gaming in mind. Steam, Lutris and Heroic will cover almost everything.
KDE looks similar to Windows 10 or Windows 7 and is highly customizable (riceable to an extent) and the desktop environment is recoverable using configs in case it breaks.
I personally have used Garuda OS and have tried PopOS and others and found peace with Garuda but I will advise against Arch based OS, not because it is difficult or something (it’s not) but because the sheer amount of updates it pushes is annoying to the point of insanity due to Arch being a bleeding edge and rolling release based OS. And no bleeding edge does not necessarily means it will be unstable, never in my 7 years of using Garuda I’ve encountered a single bug or instability due to bleeding edge.
Still won’t recommend Arch based distros, it will scrub away your SSD like a Scotch Brite.
Most importantly avoid OS that tends to use old kernels, for example Ubuntu and Mint.
Bazzite provides the latest stuff + it is immutable (means you cannot destroy your core system accidentally)
Here’s my take.. @bssunilreddy go for Mint. The perfect one for someone wanting a windows like exp. on linux!
wait is that a thing?
It’s on every Steam Deck and now even on few other handhelds.
Everyone waiting for general release.
yeah it would be big deal, let’s see, it would create console like experience right?
I used Arch for years, almost a decade, and even transferred installation from laptop to desktop.
Its pretty great, but i have seen a bad bug slip through in ext4 driver once. Caused a bit of data loss for me but luckily i caught early. Bleeding edge has its risks and sometimes things can slip through.
Only happened once. But its the reason i moved to Ubuntu LTS when i started working on linux. Need stability ( and also stable packages )
Bazzite and similar should (haven’t used it) do the same + use steam in big picture mode or something.
Would be nice to get official steamos for all hardware, but until then this should do.
Steam’s Big Picture mode is already the console like experience. Been on PC since ages.
SteamOS is just a drop in Linux distro with Steam installed by default and few other ease of life additions.
You can do everything manually of course. Install Linux of your choice, install Steam app, etc.
OP, whatever distro you try, make sure your have full data backup.
Beginners tend to learn the hard way, dual boot systems can wreak havoc if not careful.
Reason why tinkering in a VM should be the first try.
edit: Dual boot okay if you have 2 drives and dedicate one for Linux.
Dual boot is best if you have 2 different drives. in 1st you can install windows & in 2nd you can go with linux
I’m currently using mint under dual boot. It has been a very pleasant worry free experience. Granted, I haven’t tried to game.. but basic computer stuff… for day to day… is great. I’m currently not doing much it… just testing it out..
bazzite is another distro I’ve been recommended in many other places.
Yes that’s one of the big reasons to avoid Arch as a beginner, even though it is stable for most cases, when it breaks it is just as difficult.
Its pretty great, but i have seen a bad bug slip through in ext4 driver once
That’s why I’ve been using BTRFS with snapshots, had faced the same ext4 issue as well.
I’ve faced numerous system breaking bugs with Ubuntu based OS so I avoid them like plague but I guess all boils down to personal preferences, whatever tickles your tatas.
True,
The best practice I suggest is using separate drives for each OS. Then disconnect all other drives from the PC and install the OS on it.
Similarly for other OS remove all other dirves and connect the one where you intend to install it.
This way EFI will be isolated and so will be the bootloaders and any OS wont have any chance to destroy other OS at boot. Just press F12 at boot to switch OS, it’s even quicker than loading a bootloader then loading the OS.
All I have is Witcher 3 & Cyberpunk 2077 for me, Excel docs for my wife and Word & PP docs for my kid. Thats all I have in my SSD.
Yes, I already took backup of those.
Just have run rufus to install the ISO into my USB drive and its Bazzite after seeing Jay2cents video its just so easy looking at the video.
Hope nothing goes wrong while in the process of installing the OS.
