Which linux is good and I don’t know any commands so it should work just like windows?
Which linux distro is just like windows in aesthetics and regarding security it’s top notch right?
No commands these days if you pick Distro which is well made. I’d recommend OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.
Everything is click to install. Steam & Heroic Games Launcher. You need to play around a bit of settings (like Proton version, etc), but no console commands ever.
OnlyOffice is close to Microsoft Office as possible if you need that too.
Personally I use Debian everywhere, but sure needs some know-how about packages, repositories, .conf files, etc.
Should be a different thread.
And the answer will have a morbillion answers.
But in short, since you’ll be moving from windows. Mint is the linux distro for you
All drivers like mobo, GPU, wifi, ethernet, audio are available right in these linux distros and work well right?
Where can I search for them if I want to?
Any particular site?
For linux whether it comes with default internet explorer and which one?
Only NVIDIA GPU driver needs to be installed manually.
AMD/Intel use open source drivers and you don’t need to do anything.. don’t need to worry about drivers at all.
If you have NVIDIA, then don’t bother unless you are comfortable with Linux.
Why not just run a Virtual Machine? Test out and decide if you like it or not. With GPU passthrough, you can even play games on VM these days.
He can also install the distro on a USB and try it out.. can he not?
Nah.. Live USB is different, it will be slow (unless he installs on a USB SSD). VM is always better (with Virtualisation support turned on in BIOS, then it will work at native speed.. considering GPU passthrough support is also there).
I hate Live USB experience, everything you click takes time to load. Kind of off-putting.
Just download VirtualBox and install Linux there.
Ah ok. I’ve never tried VM. Will try it out next time if the experience is native to installing. Thanks!
Try and find which one you like.
Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, OpenSuse, Linux Mint, elementary OS, etc., first test in a VM and find which one suits you. There is Wubuntu which mirrors Windows, don’t know how legal it is. Also Zorin-OS.
As for office suite, use LibreOffice which is better option on Linux, for email client Mozilla Thunderbird.
Yup go with Oracle Virtual Desktop & download any Linux distro image ( i will suggest to go with ubuntu) any start your linux journey.
Also there is an option to Dual boot Windows + Linux
6 most Windows-like Linux distros because old habits die hard | ZDNET
Friends have suggested to try Fedora, Mint, Zorin, Manjaro.
I know most people suggest Ubuntu.. but Gnome isn’t as good starting point for new users and it will turn them off pretty quickly. Linux Mint Cinnamom or any distros with KDE Plasma 6 will be a much better experience coming from Windows.
KDE Plasma 6 with Wayland is so buttery smooth.
Zorin OS has a nice Windows-like DE, but I havent used it since I went Fedora. Keeps it simple and does a good job of grandfathering you in if you’re used to Windows.
However, as it’s a derivative of a derivative OS, sometimes software support is trickier than it needs to be. Everything is Ubuntu under the hood but I’ve dealt with occasions where software installs do a distro name check and abort because cat /etc/os-release says “Zorin” and not “Ubuntu”. I’m looking at you, AMD ROCm.
Still, this is a specific scenario you’re unlikely to run into if you’re just starting out. My recommendation would just be anything that has KDE, however. Fedora/openSUSE/Cachy
Linux Mint, Zorin, Pop OS, Garuda Linux and Steam OS.
Which one should be installed?
Keeping in view steam, ubisoft, gog, epic, Amazon game launchers and browsing forums and Office especially Excel and Word and converting images and screenshotting them also.
The above things are my requirement.
Though Zorin has Wine built in but no flat packages support. Has Mac OS theme in its registered version though. I like Mac Theme very much.
Does any of the above distros has in built support to nvidia and AMD GPU drivers?
Does steam os is like other linux distros or is it only for steam deck?
I did a dual boot last year and then wanted to try a different distro. It was never successful as I couldn’t do the disk partitioning properly in the tool that does it.
Recently, just dived head first into a headless installation of ubuntu server on a Dell Wyse 3040 and learning on to go. Installing packages as the need arises.
Closest to Win 10
SteamOS for other PCs is work in progress.. It’ll be out soon I guess. It will sure shake up the market!
(SteamOS is mostly Arch Linux with KDE Plasma 6 and Steam app running)
I use ubuntu + KDE. But for a gamer, it might be better to try one of these new age variants that make things more idiot proof and don’t easily allow you to break things, once installed.
You have amd gpu, so everything should work out of box.
It might be safest to install on an empty drive to avoid overwriting Windows by mistake ( Linux is fine, but you might make mistake).
I have never used it, but i would say go with bazzite or similar and keep things simple. Dont try to complicate things or listen to people saying that is better or that is better, its endless. I am happy with Kubuntu for my use, but i might use bazzite or similar for pure gaming setup.
Go for noob friendly distros. And imo go for KDE desktop ( linux can have multiple desktop gui options). Dont use Arch, its not meant for noobs. Linux may have finally turned a corner for new user friendliness with these ‘immutable’ systems.
