Why would people buy streaming devices?

so just to undertand.. I can get a 43 inch 4k TV for around 12k used and with google TV etc.. why would people buy streaming devices?

I understand when we didnt have all TV;s smart but now all TV;s are smart.. so whats the purpose of this? I dont think the Nvidia gaming service is of any good now with Tegra X1 being outdated

Yes you are right we can get a used TV but the streaming devices has their users - for example I was using it with my home theater. I am not expecting to sell this the moment it gets listed like some items - it is a slow grill. Eventually it will sell for some price for somebody who used to it.

One possible reason is the formats supported. If you have rips with bluray quality audio, in formats like Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-MA / DTS:X, these might not passed through correctly to your audio receiver when using a TV.

  1. Format compatibility as mentioned by @Silent47Assassin
  2. Streaming service lockdowns like F1 multiview being only available to apple tv
  3. Lower tier TVs have lesser performance (lagging, ugly UI, restrictions)
  4. Easy to find support instead of particular tv models

These are the only ones that come on top of my mind

It just lags. And the support ain’t that great either. I lost support for Netflix (on my 12-year-old TV ).:joy:

LG oled picture quality is great, but their webos is a huge letdown.
Solution?
Apple tv 4k, and use it as apple home hub. Snappy and assimilates well into the apple ecosystem!

Is Apple TV easy to use if I don’t have an iphone?

Think of it as how a 10k phone essentially does the same thing as a 100k one

Most TVs including flagship units tend to have weak processors. Even more underspecced on entry level models

So when people spend a fair bit on a screen, they tend to spend a bit extra on the side for a overall smoother /less frustrating experience.

Of course, it’s not a necessity. Mostly anything you can do on a apple tv or fire stick can be done on the TV UI too.

Having said that, i havent touched any TV UI other than for updating picture settings

Same here. My primary TV is android TV but I have connected Nvidia Shield Pro and FireStick 4K to it because me and my family are comfortable with FireTV Stick remote/interface (have connected FireTV Stick to all all TVs in my home) for streaming app and I use Nvidia Shield to play contents from my NAS.

well i used to think like that untill i upgraded my home theatre. the stock TV apps or even jellyfin, vlc and other apps doesn’t passthrough the audio correctly and it lags after some time. I usually play movies either through jellyfin or directly from real-debrid by copy pasting the link. certain audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS MA gets downmixed to stereo in stock apps. Sometimes i get no sound at all.

currently i have an Apple TV 4K (using infuse + jellyfin). I should have bought a Shield Pro or something else. ATV 4K will only passthrough audio till DD+ 5.1 + Atmos. It will convert all other audio streams to LPCM 7.1.

I have a MI smart TV which is about 4 years old and when purchased it worked snappy but now it take at least a minute to load the smart screen fully.

On the other hand I have a Fire stick Max which is also about 4 years old, it worked snappy then and is still working quite good.

For the simple fact that I don’t want the TV manufacturer to intentionally push an update that would force you to upgrade your TV I would always prefer using dedicated streaming devices

I don’t have any iPhone - using two apple tv at home,

To be honest one iPad though, it just helps to enter user id & password easily…Thats all.

Is there a noticeable difference between Apple TV 4k and the firestick 4k Max? I feel apple TV has better colors having used both in a home theatre setup. And for some unknown reason, after a while, Apple TV is not working when routed thru AV receiver to the Projector but the firestick 4k max works.

It seems to be a little easier to manage the software and hardware difference with the streaming devices regardless of the TV.

My friend had an Apple TV I used to stream Steam through. It was a lot better than trying to work around the TV’s apps.

Streaming devices are easier to manage, configure and handle. You can play around make changes easily. Sideload stuff . Even upgrade and downgrade updates etc. You can’t do that with Tv.

Plus its convinient to use the streaming devices. Never used in built tv system to play or watch sutff. Still remember way back in 2011 - 12 time frame my Samsung Plasma came with all apps built in, even had a camera built in for skype calls but never used the same.

Have used multiple Media players in the last 2 decades
Starting from Xstreamer way back in 2009
wdtv 1 , 2nd and 3rd Gen
Roku 2
Mi Box - 2016
Amazon FIrestick Ist Gen
Nvidea Shield TV - 2018
Firestick 4k
Onn Box 2024

Probably i am one of the few folks and know a few other folks who along with me used to watch Netflix from way back in 2009 and had a US sharing account we used DNS Proxy most of the times.

It has been an exciting journey , majority of my media players were bought and shipped from abroad - US , Canada and a few other places.

Brings back memories. I still have its remote somewhere.

I have the Xtreamer unit, remote and also the wi fi antenna that used to come with this to make it wireless lying somewhere at home. Spent Rs 9991 on Sep 2009 to buy this one.

I use firestick with monitor which doesn’t have anything built in.

I use it to get 4k HDR from prime video and it works without any hassle. Couldn’t get it to work on linux. There are too many ifs and buts to make streaming work otherwise.

Even on mobile + android, display might support HDR but often apps somehow dont work.

It also uses way less power vs desktop. Just gives me an additional option and is pretty cheap.

Built in OS lags badly due to underpowered hardware or nearly always doesn’t receive an OS update which causes apps to stop working over time depending on the SDK version they support.

You can probably stick with the TV OS for about 2-3 years but then you really need to update for hardware and software improvements.

I was hoping to see the new (rumoured) Apple TV in apple event on 9th Sep. That would have been a trigger for me to buy and try it.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen. Let’s see when do we get new Apple TV.
