[WTB]DC 5.5mm x 2.1mm to USB C Adapter

Looking for Type-C Male to 5.5x2.1mm Female Converter (something like this) for powering a 25W device.

Also open to local shops in New Delhi, if someone has an idea on where can I find this. Searched Nehru Place, they didn’t have it.

What is this device?

It’s a Slate 7. Runs at 5V, 9V and 12V. Want to use it with this router UPS

Careful, the router UPS you have gives out passive 12V.

Your slate 7 supports on PD power input only.

What this means is it negotiates with the charger to see what voltages and what current on those voltages the charger can offer.

Then it selects one voltage and the charger responds with that.


The converter you are looking for will directly feed 12V into your router. This can damage things.

I guess the safest passive voltage your router can take is the 5V because it’s the standard and negotiations happens on 5V. But I am not sure.

This sounds like bad idea to me.
just use a type c charger, 5V3A 15W will do.

If you want battery backup, try the router UPS that comes with USB output.

Or a PD capable power bank.

That’s how I’m using it. But wanted to add a UPS for power cuts.


This was in the manual and their website, which is why I assumed it supports all of those. Is it still a bad idea?
I already have the UPS (was using with MX4200), so thought of reusing instead of buying a new one.

Can you please suggest some? I’ve had a hard time finding power banks with switching time under 10ms (or fast enough to not be interrupted).

These are UPS. I meant power banks. Hard to find switching time for those.

Perhaps there’s a reason, the port you are looking for, is not commonly available.
It is extremely easy to mess up the voltages.
As the barrel connector supplies a constant/single passive voltage, AND DOES NOT NEGOTIATE, you can easily ruin your previous and expensive piece of electronic equipment.
You could be looking at something like this:

    Essentially, it would connect to any power-bank supplying 12V. You would have to keep the Power-Bank connected to power as it would ALWAYS supply power.
    Needless to say, this will strain the battery, drain, deplete, and wear out the cells quickly.

Appreciate the detailed explanation. Dropping the idea, guess I’ll just buy a multiport charger, plug it in the main UPS and call it a day.

Do you/anyone know of a MULTIPORT charger which doesn’t negotiate/restart everytime a new device is connected to it? (While also supplying 5V/3A in the process)

Use a classic multi-USB-A charger with fixed 5V rails (not a modern multi-port PD/GaN charger). Those older 6-port USB-A chargers give each port a steady 5V output and do not perform the PD/USB-C renegotiation that causes ports to drop/restart when you plug another device in. Confirm 5V @ 3.0A per port on the exact SKU spec sheet.

I have similar query.

Bought a usb 2.0 hub with switches and power input. The barrel is not the standard size (5.5mm 2.1mm). Much smaller/thinner.

I want to use it direct with power for speakers, lights, cooling pad, etc. There is no documentation but presume it will take only 5v power.

I have a tp link 12v 1a barrel (standard size) charger. Which won’t work. Also have pi 4 charger, samsung 15w and 25w charger.

Theres a giveaway for an erd 5v 2a usb port charger. I can connect a similar charger via usb direct or a barrel to usb convertor.

Don’t want to fry any device. Once I get the right charger, will experiment. Any suggestions.

per the specs it works at 5/9/12
which means its a 3.3V nominal device with an onboard buck regulator that can take up to 12V .. or rather between 5 - 12V

The good news is that the 5V compliance makes it very easy as you dont need to mess around with PD decoys and such.

Just try powering it up with any traditional USB A to C cable with any old USB A 5V charger.
it should work fine but validate it anyway

Once validated, splice said USB A to C cable
Check the +/- terminals with a multimeter.

Then use any cheap 5V UPS off amazon/ blinkit etc (usually well under 1K)
Splice the output cable of that UPS and connect to the USB C cable you just spliced..
Done

PS: this is a common misconception .. but Its not risky at all to use higher current rating chargers /power supplies …like absolutely never

Its not risky to use lower rated also although with lower rated, worst case , your device will reboot/power down if its tries to draw more power than what power supply can handle.. These mini routers will almost never draw beyond 7-8W though (which is 1.4-1.6A at 5V)

You’ve overestimated my tinkering skills. Also, how does one splice a usb A to C cable and then join it with barrel/usb output of another device (UPS in this case)?

Yeah, in my experience, connecting it to lower wattage charger simply reduces WiFi range, while also powering down the USB tethering (which I’ve setup as a failsafe during internet outages).

its just joining wires
Splicing = cut the wires and
a) separate the 4 wires of the USB cable. 2 are the +/- and 2 are data
b) separate the 2 wires of the UPS output cable and join the +/- of this to the ones from (a)
