People already started getting mails from YouTube. Saw this on reddit
YT knows very well the market for watching on TVs and they canāt lose that chunk to subscription sharing, so they are taking the Netflix route. Next is going to be jump in subscription rates.
Eagerly waiting for my mails to come. Iāll see if the same Tailscale workaround I used previously for Netflix still works for this and if yes, Iāll grumpily deal with it. Else, sayonara.
But obligatory āscrew youā to all these companies that canāt be bothered to see that friends/groups might actually prefer a discount for bulk signup and canāt be bothered to formally roll that out as a plan after all these years. Why just āfamiliesā?
Tailscale should work as you are essentially routing your connection through your home ip address. I donāt think this moderation will go beyond ip address tracking to check where the users are.
Yeah, thatās the hope but have to see. But this is annoying either way and I hope itās an annoyance I only have to deal with once in a quarter or better.
Even legit family users get issues when someone is travelling the world and I feel like thatās unavoidable even in YTās case. Imagine doing all the ārightā things and still having to deal with crap like that.
EDIT: if anyone is planning to run a tailnet but donāt want other members to access your home network, I noted earlier in my blog the policy config that should work such that they can only access the public internet via your router: Allowing friends to surf the web via my home network with Tailscale grants | Automagic
AdGuard Home can be set up on a router with openwrt to block all ads, including YouTube ads, for every device connected to the network. Iāve been using it and tested it on a fresh browser without any ad-block extensions, and it successfully prevents ads from showing.
I have not gotten a mail, yet. But if they do this, Iāll stop this sub. Enough with the BS.
Smartube is best alternative for TV so far.
As per Google support, all family members should live in the same country in case of YouTube Premium family plan subscription. There is screenshot floating over from someone who moved to another country.
I guess nothing to worry as of yet ? If anyone received a noticed please share.
There is another conflicting response from support:
Youtube Employees are unclear about this POLICY yet !
This is sadly unsurprising. It will take time for these things to trickle down to support usually and IDK if we know which countries this is rolling out to first?
Revanced works fine for me
Youtube has released new youtube premium lite plan āoffers fewer interruptionsā.
For non-rooted mobiles too ?
Yes, Iām using Revanced on my Nothing phone (non-rooted) and itās been working fine
SmartTube has been having a lot of problems lately. I have a premium plan and I use the SmartTube for my own content with SponsorBlock and keep the official app for family members.
When you donāt have playback errors, the videos keep buffering in between. I can continue watching the same video on the official app without problems.
Google is now being very aggressive with clamping down on ad-skipping and not really sure how long an app like SmartTube will work considering it has issues so often and will die the moment the developer decides that enough is enough. Guess the donations are still worth it for him for the time being.
I have a premium family plan (6 person). 3 ppl are at home and 1 each to my sister, my brother in law and friend in the same city.
Youtube has been my life for a couple of years and now everyoneās in my family group. There is something for everyone. Stuff that I canāt pirate. Love the fact that I can login from anywhere and on any device.
Letās see what disruptions happen. Iām not hopeful.
Faced similar issues with netflix (my sis had to get her own, she would have been the 4th stream) and prime (allowing only 2 tvs to be registered, have 5 at home and adding ads)
I only see ads in live sports (most annoying), prime (hardly watch though) and free to play android games.
This is what pushed people to piracy and 3rd party apps
