i hope someone comes up with something like pi-hole, which even blocks youtube and other in-app ads. Then no more spending money on youtube premium and also being paranoid that google might suspend me, a paying user.
if only someone had already made a magical, totally non-existent thing called ReVanced that solves this exact problem… guess we’ll never know
My brother who’s not tech savvy has subscribed to the premium family plan and my parents are on it and watch it in a different city.
I have installed FOSS YouTube clients on their phones but they like the ease of use of the familiar YouTube app. If Google does block it then I’m telling him to cancel.
The premium is worth is just for the God damned ads that Google puts up in the feed.
I’ve been using youtube premium since 2019 I think..
Yotube has been successful in making adblocking pretty cumbersome. Removing ublock etc which were able to do a lot more blocking on chrome was the last step. Now they know they can do any anti-consumer behaviour and not get much blowback.
Unfortunately for them their corporate greed will send people back and these adblocking projects will gain more momentum again.
Non-existent indeed for ios and TVs. I have premium for ipad and TV and I still use revanced for other features like sponsor skip, dislike counter, etc..
There is one mysterious thing called SmartTube for Android tv ![]()
I have joined a family plan here. What happens to it? I either has to update the address to the leaders address who created the group like in Spotify.
Shit man everything is going to smithereens. All OTTs are paid for an year and yet they are still pushing ads one way or the other.
Now this.
I really don’t like ads in YouTube that’s why I took the premium.
There’s this wild invention called non-android TVs. Major brands like lg and samsung make it difficult to run modded apps.
Literally everyone knows about revanced and smarttube buddy. Premium family is simply very affordable and convenient.
I think it would be IP dependent not what address we provide
there’s YouTube Plus (ex. YTLite) which can be sideloaded if you really want to
Hate to break it to you, but it’s not a proper solution for multiple reasons
- Doesn’t work on tv’s, laptops, and ios devices
- Yes you can bypass ads on laptops, but no good option for ios/tv..
- App updates
- Even when you get an update, its not as straightforward as just downloading from playstore
- I am a rooted user and for whatever reason, both yt and ytm revanced disappear after the device reboots.. And I am not the only one, you can find multiple such threads online.. Now imagine rebuilding and installing revanced apps every few days
I am not defending youtube premium at all. I myself am a revanced user, but it’s just not as convenient.. I tried yt premium family for a few months last year, and everything just works.. But I don’t know how to feel about this change to their family plan.. On one hand, yes it forces people to pay more, on the other, India has one of the cheapest plans, well atleast it used to.. I think if they planned to do this change, they could’ve skipped increasing the prices a few months back.. But then again Capitalism ![]()
I know it not the best solution when it comes to user experience but the features it offers makes me stick to it especially sponsor block plugin and options to remove shorts completely from the app. I upgraded to youtube premium just two days back just because it wanted the add to queue feature but I still gravitate towards using revanced. I haven’t tried adding my premium account to revanced app as it is my main google account and I fear there might a slight possibility of it getting flagged and I don’t wanna risk it.
Yeah I agree on the features part, but that’s mostly for the tech savy imo.. Most people getting youtube family, actually get it for their families, I am certain that most families have at max one person who is willing to try out such stuff, and youtube is trying to milk on that fact..
I have actually done that, it didn’t cause any issues for me.. But then again, I was a rooted user, so the revanced app actually used the original youtube package name..
A lot of the times, the reason to get the subscription is for use by family members who can use the original app.
Revanced patches stop working and need to be updated continuously.
Smart Tube has frequent issues with 401 errors or videos not loading, so it is one update away from not working if the developer chooses to give up on it.
The sideloaded iOS apps are probably better in terms of being essentially the original app with all features integrated but then you need a proper certificate to use it over long term with manual updates.
Anyway, if the location check is going to happen randomly at any time, there isn’t much that can be done when sharing with others over sites like this, without sharing a home VPN connection which is very risky.
@roygarg we just made one ![]()
@Zork Lmao. no worries. let it run its course. when we get this notification, we’ll see what can be done.
The only issue with side loading in iOS is none of the apps(YT) are completely open source. Fortunately, if all you need is ad free YouTube, it’s only a couple of lines of patch (available in many GitHub repos). Gives me some peace of mind not installing an unknown app in my phone.
Lol i use revanced yt and yt music, and it works better than yt premium
I personally use ublock on my firefox on desktop/android. For my parents, I just let them watch youtube with ads, in hopes that the enshittification will eventually make them get off that [rage/click]bait content machine.
