Hey we can talk in Vernacular too!!!!!

Yup. I just copy pasted this stuff from unicode.org
I guess if I had typed it in MS Word (have to link the hindi fonts in there) then that wud work too.
But it raises cool possibilities.
eg. Hindi Usernames, Arabic passwords!

ما هي الشفرة الموحدة "يونِكود" ؟

Well, I am glad that I am not the only one who came up with this (I never saw the thinkdigit thing, have posted there but once in the last year).
Actually, I thought of it after learning about unicode (thank you Charles Petzold) and figured that as long as the display fonts are installed (as they are in FF) that this shud work with no problem. The only thihng that does not show up successfully is the title in the titlebar of FF. Will have to report that to them, I guess.

is an interesting read. Hey, maybe someone can shift this to a non test forum. I know that is irregular but it will get more coverage. I think it is an interesting concept (using local languages). It should not necessarily be encouraged on this board (we wudn't be able to understand each other), but for our country, it is indeed the only way that computers will ever permeate to the rural areas.

well...i dont have Hindi fonts installed on my comp...so all i see is a bunch of boxes...so, such messages wont be disp properly for everyones comp.
Besides, it is recommended we stick to english as TE is read by many ppl who dont know Hindi also.

About passwords....u can try ur luck:P

Hmm.. Those arent Hindi Fonts .. They are Unicode .. You will see them if you have Win XP or Win 2K or Unicode aware software on Windows 98 ..

Actually you DO need fonts. It may be that they are in built into windows 2k/XP but fonts ARE required. These are not the old days where u needed code pages, but fonts are still required. Do you think Arial and Times New Roman use different codes? No - they just use the same codes which are displayed differently as per font info stored on your comp. So you still need fonts against which the unicode is compared and displayed. Admittedly, unicode does not work in 98 (and ME I think) bcos 98 does not recognise the concept of 2 byte characters (except one API call - is it MessageBoxW? Can't remember, will have to look it up). For proof, go to the same old unicode page where I copied that hindi text from
http://www.unicode.org/standard/translations/hindi.html
and the arabic was
http://www.unicode.org/standard/translations/arabic.html
Bth are visible there, but I can't read the japanese on
http://www.unicode.org/standard/translations/japanese.html

In fact go to http://www.unicode.org/standard/WhatIsUnicode.html
(ebglish version) and check out the sidebar on the left. You will notice that only some languages are visible and the rest are boxes. But if you install Far Eastern fonts there will be no problem (they can be installed from ur XP CD)

A quote from the [RANK=http://www.unicode.org]Unicode Consortium Website[/RANK] (on that left hand sidebar)
Display Problems
Depending on the level of Unicode support in the browser you are using and whether or not you have the necessary fonts installed, you may have display problems for some of the translations, particularly with complex scripts such as Arabic. For further information, see [RANK=http://www.unicode.org/help/display_problems.html]Display Problems[/RANK]

i can see only question marks for the first post by kk.. can anyone give the link for tat unicode fonts required to view them.

i use win2k....its nothing to do with win2k or win XP....i think its the fonts that are installed on ur comp.....u may have a similar font with a diff name installed on ur comp or something...coz for me...i see only squares:P

Only in the page title, though!
In the message, it shows up properly!
