well i m finally planning to buy a 1 tb internal HDD , i have shortlisted the WD 1TB green,

1.shud i get this or the seagate 7200.12 , i m more inclined towards WDC coz of it reliability!!

i m currently having a 160 gb seagate IDE HDD

2.my mother board does not have any sata port so i ll be buying a ide to sata converter as well ,

now my question is after using the ide to sata converter will the speed of the new one decrease, will it still give same optimal performance?

is it recommended to use it as such

3.the other question is that shud i keep the OS in my 160 gb segate IDE HDD only and keep the new 1tb for storage

or shud i just sell it off and keep the new 1TB WD only !

4.and lastly how much shud 160gb seagate ide sell for

its 7200.7 and warranty till 2011

thanks in advance for help :)

1:: Ill suggest WD becaouse of onsite warranty u dont have to run around centre ..ya but once gone it takes 12-15 days for return..Also offlate lot of huge capacity seagates are failing as seen on threads on TE

2::HAvent try it so cant comment but ya surely performance decrease will happen..no doubt upto 10%(or say 3-5mb/sec less copy speed)

3:: That would be best option ...As when u OS crashes and if HDD is culprit ull b happy your data is safe .As the chances of OS crash is high than data storage hdd

4::Even if u get 1.3-1.5k(Since its IDE else i would had said 1k)..but best option would be to keep it with yourself and when warrannty comes near end and if u buy new mobo with onboard sata try for replacement and ask the guy for sata replacement ...i dont think he would mind as sata is presently available everwhere

The mainboard doesn't have a SATA port? What age old motherboard are we talking of? :O

About time you upgraded it. Your new drive should work on the IDE bandwidth - speed would be obviously lower than that of SATA speeds.

You may as well try your luck at getting the 160GB IDE drive RMA'd. You may get a better drive (perhaps a refurb!).

Lastly go ahead with the WD 10EADS - I'd rate WD's warranty & service policy to be a notch better than Accel's policy for Seagate.

^well this was not i was expecting to get the RMA and all :P

i m using the same rig since 2004-05, havent upgraded rather never needed to upgarde

but now i need some storage space ,

i m ok even if i get lower speeds after using ide to sata converter

but i need space , so please suggest accordingly and reply to my questions ,

i may upgrade the complete setup later but not as of now!!

Mohit the only problem is i guess hardly anyone would have tried the conversion stuff..so i guess it would be better to do google search and see how much difference people faced.....

I guess better idea would be to get pci sata card.......I guess that would be good option than getting ide to sata adaptor(feels it more the computer way..rather the other look jugad(adjustment) to me)

You will roughly have 60-70% lower transfer rate with IDE to SATA adapter. Just for testing I connected SATA adapter on IDE port on an old 845 board and performed HD Tach test. Here is the result.
wdidesat.jpg

This drive normally have 96-100MB/s read rate and 12ms random access time on a normal SATA port.

WD Green would be better option if you are going to use as storage. Anyway whatever model, buy only WD .

1.Keep your old IDE HDD.
2.Please let your system setup be known,so it's better for people to give apt advises.
3.Buy WDC 1TB green.
3.buy pci-sata card.damage would be 200 bucks or so.
4.your seagate 7200.7(barracuda rite??) is an Ultra ATA 5 (IDE) drive.that's why I said do no.(2) first.
But that doesn't confirm whether your mobo has ATA 5 or ATA 6.ATA 5 has theoretically max transfer rates of 100MBytes per second and ATA 6 have 133 MBytes per second.
Theoretically, you should be able to max out your HDD.
But again,as said by other members, you may encounter some problems with IDE to SATA conversion.and there may be some speed loss.
Usually, pci to sata should offer better speeds, both sustained and burst(burst doesn't matter much in your case).

Importantly, both depend on DMA(direct memory access) in some way or other,so you wouldn't be able to max out either way, considering the 2004-05' ram/config that you have(again do 2)

@virus32win: The older pc on which you checked the ide-sata converter speeds may itself be the bottleneck.could you let us know the other specs of that pc,maybe that are causing such drop in speeds, not necessarily the IDE-to-Sata itself?!!?!??!

Explanation for 2:so,WDC 1TB green 101EADS is the choice for you to go,as it's slower(don't care condition for you)
But should be more reliable.
as for 7200.12 ,you won't be able to reap the speed benefits for sure and if and when you upgrade your system then, you would have better HDD options available then.
comes in two models,two-platter and three-platter.three-platter though slower but would have more shelf life.haah, don't bother much, the ones available almost everywhere in the market are 3platter ones.

5. I would suggest you make your newer HDD,your boot drive.as it is faster.
you would lose data, when your HDD crashes. So better is to backup sensitive data on both drives.so you could use the 160gb as sensitive data backup drive.
6. check the thread where HD tach screenshots are posted, older pages maybe.and you would find the ones similar to your case.and would get to know better what speeds you would get.
7.How could you get warranty till 2011 on your HDD,plus earlier Seagate had only 3years warranty,so it should have been bought in 2008
and still it's IDE:tongue::tongue::tongue:

HD TAch screenie from virus32win suggests that you shall rather opt for 1TB external HDD, costs ~4850 and you won't have to care about the converter.

1. You have ATA 6(IDE) ,so max bandwidth is 133MBPS.so,it should be ok.But please avoid ide to sata converter at all costs.as they work at different voltage levels and therefore you would need to give power(from smps) to your converter. And they don't work always.

2. PCI 2.2 specs about your mobo can't be found out.
But from the least values known,it is 133MBPS(worst case)
But I am guessing since your bus is 64bit,it may be 264MBPS!
either way you are on higher side of what the newer HDDs can offer.
I hope you are not using any other PCI device.(saw that you have AGP gfx card)as,lesser devices mean better efficiency.
I think PCI-to sata card is the best option(price maybe around 200-300,dunno exactly but definitely less than 500).

3.viruswin32 hasn't posted the pc spec on which he did the ide-to-sata converter speed tests.
But RAM usage in your computer is already 92%,so Iam not sure whether you would touch the max speeds of WDC 1TB Green..
but you are already getting average 45MBytes per second(with your old HDD) as per HDTach results(correct me if it is not the case)

3.No point of external HDDs for any desktop. They should be bought ONLY if you need mobility.

4.you may keep your old HDD as OS drive itself.
As you don't need speed for any data-intensive jobs.keeping 1tb as Storage only would help preserve it's life.
also, backup sensitive data (i.e., keep on both drives)
and if and when old one fails,,you can ask for a sata replacement. And you would have a faster and fatter HDD than your old HDD.
P.S.-Most pci to sata cards come with 2 internal sata ports(DO CHECK,still) and one external e-sata port.so you needn't worry about it in the future when you get replacement for your old seagate:tongue:
To sum et all:
1.Buy pci-sata card
2.Buy 1TB WDC Green
3.:clap::clap::clap:

average 45MBytes per second(with your old HDD) as per HDTach results(correct me if it is not the case)

yes i m getting this speed from my old ide HDD

WD is way over rated imo, i have had more number of WDs failing on me compared to seagate and WD green has speeds equivalent to 7200.10 series from barracuda.

7200.12 series has ~100MBps Average transfer speed.

warranty is like once or twice in 5yr 'if it at all happens' and if you can take that burden then you shall not compromise on the performance difference..

although for a person without sata slot on board, its advisable to get external hdd or internal + hdd doc

Hi....the new Seagate 7200.12 perform very well....also seagate warranty and service i much better...the TAT is usually 7-8 days max....of course the period is not consistent...there were a couple of times that took upto 18 days....but i am mostly happy with seagate.....also i think seagate 7200.12 perform a little bit better that WD Greens.....:hap2::hap2:

Bumping this thread .

Can't decide between seagate and WD .

And why most of members opt for WD .

Does Wd HDD fail less than Seagate.

I know there was a failing spree with seagate but that in past.

Does the new seagate have failed someone or not.

will need the new HDD for backup purpose .

Cant go wrong with either of them - WD has an extra advantage with their customer support. Door-to-door pickup/delivery service, should the hard drive require a replacement whereas for Seagate, you need to drop it off at the nearest Accel Frontline branch.

I'd opt for the WD 10EADS over the 7200.12 Seagate 1TB.

Bumping .

Getting the seagate one .

Any last suggestion That will keep my HDD from Going kaput.

And Did any 7200.12 Seagate 1TB owner having trouble with it.
