Hi ,
I'm going to upgrade my internet speed from 2mbps.
I want to watch 1080p videos on you tube without buffering. What speed do I need?
Also what speed do I need to watch 720p without buffering?

Thanks

YouTube streaming does not solely depend on speed. There might be chance you have very high speed Internet but the videos might still buffer. This is because of some sort of peering and contracts between ISP and YouTube and local cache and such. I don't know the exact words but it might differ from ISP to ISP.
Someone more knowledgable can enlighten us on these causes ( not the speed issue).

If your ISP has YouTube cache then even with 512Kbps you can stream 1080p without any issues , speed does matters along with good pings to the server

Exactly, look for ISP that has YouTube cache server. I am on 1Mbps line but I can buffer 1080p videos without even waiting for a second. If YouTube is your primary need, go for ISP with YouTube caching..

My ISP cache YouTube, Commonly downloaded torrents, Microsoft related stuff, Google Play Store and some common file sharing hosts.. I get almost everything downloaded at the speed of around 1.5-2 MBps..

Hi ,
Thanks for the info. Can you please elaborate on how I can get my ISP with you tube cache?
I'm on a 2mbps airtel connection and it can stream 360p without buffering.
Other torrents and stuff gets downloaded at 200-250kbps.

1080p Videos could be done easily on a 5mbps connection and 720p on a 3mbps connection Considering your ISP routing is fine..

- Except MTNL, BSNL i Guess every other company caches the torrents and youtube.
- Even though there is a 1080p cache at the ISP end the video will load at 512kbps only(360p). This is my observation with my ISP. Speaking of which, Beam runs ~9 torrent Cache including a special one for Overseas TV and Movie content.

Didn't know ISPs cache YouTube! Anyway, I have a 2 mbps BSNL connection, and when it's trouble free, which is 30% of the time, I get 225 KB/s, which is around 1.6-1.7 mbps I can watch 720P videos decently. But I always download a video rather than watching it via IDM, lot less loss of bandwidth. And I don't think BSNL has any stuffs cached other than porn sites maybe!

First time I am hearing about torrents getting cached. Its a P2P protocol, with pieces of data flying around from individual to individual. Cannot be cached as per the definition.

you are downloading a Torrent> ISP system notices a file being downloaded many times. ISP Cache system downloads it to their System> Next time a user downloads the Same file it shares few pieces say majority from their local servers. So their International Bandwidth is saved and a lot of GB's are Saved.
Beam runs 8-9 Torrent Caches. How do you think ISP's are offering 4mbps Truly unlimited for 666+txes in Hyderabad while majority of the downloads are through p2p?

This should give an Idea(looks like BSNL joined the party):
Also if you're wondering what this ip 56.3.204.49 showing US flag? Just Reverse the IP 49.204.3.56 and trace it. Belongs to Beam. I have no clue about that flag of that IP might be because of some advanced caching system

You can ask your ISP to work with google to implement GGC (Google Global Cache) for more details peering.google.com
I'm also helping my ISP to build such service

Torrent caching is possible, but dont know whats the rule of thumb for a distributed system

Apart from that, the best way to find out about Youtube speeds is to check out your neighbours net :D

If you are in Mumbai - 5Net has it.
