Making computers cheap and affordable, the government on Tuesday launched a Rs 10,000 battery-run computer, the mobile desktop, which is much lighter than the currently available products.

The mobile desktop, Mobilis, and two of its variants – Mobilis Wireless and SofComp, an ultra-compact desktop – were launched here by Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal.

The three products would be in the market in three-four months time and would be priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000.

These have been developed under the New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI) being implemented by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, in partnership with Encore Software Ltd.

Well, maybe they can beat Negroponte. (MIT Media Lab, trying to develop sub 100$ lappy, very close he says, but still trying to get the rear projection screen ready I believe)

Don't know - these seem to be more of the purely functional type.
This stuff is spreading like wildfire.
First, the cnet link above.
Now, a link to an indiatimes article on the [H]. Cool!!!!!
General opinion is this thing is sexy.

Yep, checked the pics and they look quite stylish :) Not bad, since i was expecting some rough around the edges kinda design.
Unfortunately it looks more like PDA based hardware, so you might not have the extensive capabilities of a general OS like WinXP.

Apparently, they will be running on Intel XScale processors - more commonly found in PDAs. So I guess at the most they could run an OS similar to Windows CE. They state they are using Linux, so most probably a very very light-weight linux distribution. Windows CE would also be offered according to them.

I think you should have no problem with using this as a development platform, after all, you will be using a fully fledged OS (linux), and GCC should run without problem :)

Finally a good move made there :) after all, tax cuts and import duty cuts are only significant if computers are affordable for the common person, so a move in the right direction ...
