Well, my comp has two 80 mm fans, one is the CPU fan, the other is the system fan...
well they are noisy as hell.
Now I hear that replacing these with 120mm fans provides better cooling (and lower noise). Is the noise part true?
And how much wud these cost? The CPU fan at least shud be one of those smart ones with speed regulation...Any particular company?

as for the noise part, 120 mm i think can run at lower rpm's, also noise would depend on the quality of fan(brand)

grabit does not support 120mm fans. So you are out of luck there.

Depending on heatsink fan you will be able to add 120MM fan to it if you use aftermarket heatsink.

For a 120mm fan i would recommend you the CM fans, they are really silent. I have a 120mm UV fan from CM. Antec fans are also good and silent but coslty. So go for Cooler Master fans.

I got a few 120mm fans @ 400/- each from SMC.
They came well packaged, and titled: UV SILENT 12025 SYSTEM FAN.
Specifications are:
Fan Size: 120x120x25mm
Voltage(volt): 12 VDC
Current(ampere): 0.05 A+-0.01A
Input Power(watt): 0.6W+-10%
Speed(R.P.M.): 1220 R.P.M.+-10%
Air Flow(CFM): 42.734CFM
Air Pressure: 1.557mmH2O
Noise: 22dB-A
Weight: 118.67g
Life: 30,000 hours
Bearing type: sleeve
Speed sensor: yes

Two things I don't like about my fans are: the color purple, and the sleeve
bearing type. My kid brother didn't specify a ball-bearing type while getting
these from SMC. I'll get a few decent ones when I get there in two weeks.

Antec fans are way too overpriced, IMHO. I would definitely like solid Sunon
or Panaflo fans if someone can get them for me. I'll pay for your kind service. ;)

I have 5 different brands of 120mm fans - theres a big difference in prices and noise levels. The least noise is from a Vantec Stealth 120mm fan which cost me about 760/- . I have an Antec Smart fan which cost me 1000/- which is the noisiest of the lot. Makes a horrible grinding sound. One of my favourite fans is the 120mm Papst (paid 1000/-) which I have used for about 10 years now. If a fan makes too much noise I run it at 7v and this slows it down and reduces the noise. Generally I find less noise from the 120mm fans compared tot he 92 and 80mm.

Some newer mother boards have fan speed control built into the BIOS so you dont need to have a fan with its own speed regulator.

My second computer in which I have a AMD 2000+ had high CPU temps of around 58C so I cut a 120mm hole on the side panel and placed a Sunon fan and now the CPU temps are around 49C. This fan is a bit noisy. I dont have any idea about this fans CFM or RPM.

Well I use a regular heatsink... default one that came with the Clawhammer. The 80mm fan is a perfect fit on it, so I guess the 120 is no go... too bad. I really wanted to do something about the damned noise. It sounds like a jumbo jet taking off at times.

@Eazy:
Where did you get Vantec fans from? I'm dying to get Tornado 80/92mm ones.
Vantec Tornado 80mm moves 84CFM @ 5700RPM. Truly amazing!

Stand in the "Q"....

Would you believe that there is ONE 92mm Tornado ........ which Sunny has booked from my contact and has yet to get delivery of...... Sunny keeps begging and pleading for the fan but as the guy does not have a price from Vantec till date so he says he cannot sell it .... and Sunny is like ....PLEASE .....PULEEEEZE..... give me the fan.

You guys are NUTS :S .... using a fan as noisy as the Tornado... sounds like a vacuum cleaner. You are aware that ear plugs dont come with the fan ??

^ LOL!
Tornado may sound more than a Jet engine, but I'm still going to put at least two in my case. ;)
Anyway, I can't also find fan grills in my locality. Any idea where to get good quality 80/120mm fan grills from?

Grills are available in many shops in Lamington Road Mumbai... but I buy from
these people... they also have a lot of fans ... 80mm to large 9 inch diameter fans if you want more POWER !!! Ask them for the Sunon ball bearing fans. They dont stock Vantecs but occcasionly they get Panaflos and Papst fans.

If you are going to phone them you have to add a 2 in front of the phone number.

The grills are about 10/- each and they come in chrome or black finish - they both rust over time.

Thanks! Though it's rather messy to place order on phone, and to request them
to courier fans 1500km away. :P

In Chennai ask ....

Fortune Marketing Chennai on 93810 72789

OR

R.K. Electronics 2851 0376

OR

Supreme Computers 98400 85482

if any of these can get you the CM fans - they are partners of SMC Internanational for other products but not CM. Maybe one of these can help you get CM fans.
