Laptops 13 inches dell laptop for sis: confused among xps, vostro and inspiron

hey guys

sis needs a new laptop. she was going for vaio....but i am forcing her for dell.

looked at dell website.

1. inspiron 13 inches is mentioned. but no price. even the call center ppl dnt knw d details. so not planning to wait as it might even take a month.

2. now confused between xps and vostro. which one to go for guys ?

3. and also, should i give second thought about going for any company other than dell ?

Price is not a problem. upto 70 K. dell has advantage of home service and complete cover. (is it true that dell service is bad. every other shopping mall electronics shop tells this ? also abt heating issue ? do dell laptops really heat up earlier than other companies laptops ?

4. i wanted her to get Mac. But she is just another windows user. so out of picture.

any other company and specific 13 inches model ?

thanks in advance....

1. The inspiron 13 isnt launched in India yet.

2. So long as you prefer performance over looks, get the vostro, though i guess ur sis will prefer looks, + with ur budget you can afford it :)

3. Dell service isnt BAD. I am guessing the shop guys wanted you to buy something they had avl and gave them more of a margin. Dell is in fact preferred for its decent service compared to some others :) + onsite and completecover

4. No diff heating issues as such. Ignore any such rumors.

5. Skip the Geforce chips on the XPS tho, get the Intel GMA. NVIDIA mobile CPUs (8XXXM series) are faulty.

Other 13"ers? Lots avl from compaq/acer etc for good prices.

I prefer the vostro 13" for its good pricing :)

thanks for such a well framed answer....and spl thanks for nvidia geforce faulty chips info.....

i am also inclining more towards vostro....will try to convince sis...

what to you say about dell vostro vs mac 13 inch ? (i know its really huge enough to even ask in a simle one liner question like this but if we just compare hardware and guarantee here)...

is it worth going for mac (less system specs than vostro) if i am able to convince her ?

If you could wait for Inspiron 13, its a nice lappy and you'll be able to configure it with some really good stuff without breaking the bank, and how about this one

Latitude e4300 looks really sweet but I'm not sure if its in India right now (probably my next purchase).

1. The vostro is a good lappy, + good VFM as well, esp if you can get some decent discounts via some forum members.

2. Vostro Vs Mac? From ur posts, it seems u want to convince her for it even tho she doesnt want it that much. Usually its the other way around. :P Personally, I prefer performance, so would take the better specced vostro for the same price. + here she doesnt even want it man, leave it.

3. The inspiron 13 will b decent as well. But dunno when it ll come here. + pricing will be similar to vostro 13 i guess.

4. @imax: The E4300 isnt avl here yet.

If its for your sis , I reallly think a Macbook should be at the top of your priority list

can run windows too but once you have used OS X for a few weeks, you really wont go back to Windoze

Now this was who was missing from the discussion ;)

Tho I still say if she doesnt want it, leave it :P

If it was a windows machine I wanted, I'd take the XPS 1330 with GMA950 and LED backlight

Having said that, I have been using windows since half the members on this forum were wearing nappies

Yet having recently switched to the Macbook from the XPS's older Bro (XPS 1210), I really can't think why i'd go back to Windows

When the Vostro series were launched the screens were criticised heavily for the amount of backlight bleed, plus the consistency with build quality was lacking too. Does anyone have any idea if thats still the case? If it is you might want to stay away. IMHO, the Vostros have always been portrayed as dirt cheap laptops and nothing else.

Did hear so too, that there were issues with Vostro. Not sure if its sorted out yet.

They are targeted at the price conscious commercial segment. Hence perhaps the notion.

E-Series have been launched recently and its available in commercial space. not sure if its available in the consumer segment. meaning, u cant walk into a store and pick up a Latitude notebook. I got to see the Latitude series y'day and they are miles apart from the boring D-series latitude thats been there all this while.

+1 for the XPS 1330 :)

wierd, i called dell last week and they said that the inspiron 13 was available at retail outlets only.

but outlest is available only in mumbai and bangalore....

hey guys just read some reviews of this model on mouthshut.com....

everybody seems to be complaining about the nvidia and related motherboard problem....now i recall one of my friend also had such kind of problem in certain xps model....

final verdict here from the experts please....? will getting the same model without nvidia card save from any such problems ?
my sis is relying on me as she is a plain simple windows computer user with no advanced knowledge (reason for not getting mac for her ).....dont want her to be in trouble later on ?

Exactly, when both DellAND Nvidia have confirmed issues, why do you stillwant to go for it, esp when your sis doesnt need it ;)

Get it with intel onboard ONLY.

i wanted to go for it because of performance specially on vista.....thats the only reason......dedicated graphic card is definitely better than shared one....

ok then....i will go for intel card only....

The nvidia failure issue has been fixed already - almost 4 months back. The new batches with the nvidia graphics cards shouldnt have any issues.

how should i get this confirmed ? dell customer care ?
