Laptops 13 inches dell laptop for sis: confused among xps, vostro and inspiron

The nvidia failure issue has been fixed already - almost 4 months back. The new batches with the nvidia graphics cards shouldnt have any issues.

Raghu, links please? AFAIK, the only fix given was a BIOS that ran the fans at higher speed keeping temps lower. Its only a temp fix as it means card will fail after sometime instead of sooner as in earlier cases

The cards are still the same AFAIK, with the weak silicon base or watever was causing the original issue.

The underfill material (not weak silicon base) changes have already been made and tested (even in those conditions that caused the failure of the previous ones). Its difficult for me to provide links, but will it be sufficient if I say that I know the people who made the material change and tested it?

last i read about the issue, Charlie was saying that the issue was gonna be fixed with products that appear in 'channels' starting Sept'08

Well, I know where you work and so you have first hand info, not doubting that

Only thing is, there is currently no way of verifying before getting the laptop that it has a newer GPU or not. For all we know, Dell can be putting in older inventory stuff too, right? So its kind of a risk all the same.

Esp in this case, cos his sis just needs a laptop for normal use, for her the absence or presence of the card isnt a dealbreaker. Otherwise, yes, it would be nice to get confirmation that all newer laptops ship with fixed chips but is there any way to actually get that?

The chips prone to failure have been taken care of. They arent being used in the new laptops - Dell especially because of the way they handle inventory.

Having a graphics card is always better since she can take advantage of aero, compiz. Acceleration for H.264 playback it will help out with movies too.
