Hi guys,

i would like to know which one should i buy 1Tb external HDD or DVD . I need them for backup my movie and anime . Also i don't watch movie more then 1 times and anime only if it too good then 2times .

SO i wanted to know which one would be best for backup and store it for atleast 3years . I already had bad experience with HDD where i lost all my data next day HDD was dead Well it was on warranty so i replaced it and sold it from that day i am using WD HDD only atleast they haven't given me any problem .

thank You

This is something that I have been giving a lot of thought to as well. I've had a couple of Samsung Hard Drives fail on me recently and subsequently lost a shit load of data.

i got a WD My Book 1TB from ebay too, did a 30 hour non stop stress test on it by transferring data to/from it and its working cool n fine , now i am tranferring my data on it .

Yea sure go for the HDD.

One fine day the lovely HDD will fail taking down the whole dump and stalwarts here will advice the Data Recovery center as well.

@swastikrj: i thought dvd's are better for storing movies etc as you wont lose your entire collection if one or two dvds out of 100 pack fail whereas with hard disks you lose your entire collection at once, can you give any reasons as to why an external hdd and not dvds?

well my many old sony cd still working . my father brought them 6years ago . But i have no idea about DVD . i am now totally confuse

IIRC... at that time 1 cd was cost Rs60-90, so was best quality, now Rs.8/- CD... HTH

So you really go on the quality with just the price?

At that time CD was costly cause it was relatively unused technology. Same was with DVD when it was new and same is with BD right now.

Wont it be much more convenient to buy an ext. HDD? How often do HDDs fail?

I have a 640GB ext HDD and its been two years and my data is secure. I was considering to buy a bigger capacity ext. HDD but some of the posts above have scared me, is it really not advisable to buy these HDDs?

no its not that everyone is unlucky like me who woke up in morning on sunday thinking i gona watch some anime and movie and start his external drive but nothing happened later he finds that its dead xP .

So ya after that non of HDD gave me problem but just for storing anime and movie i think DVD would better as normally we don't watch them again unless someday we get mody . Also bit worried if unluck again strick me on sunday

I have been using my External Maxtor drive since 3 years without a problem.
Also got myself a new Transcend 640gb External drive for all my Tele Series and movies.
Now you guys scaring me.

Before being scared, you should give a proper thought first of all.. its a simple logic. You put all ur eggs in one basket, you risk all of it at once.

640 GB gives u one stutter and u ll be running to get another one for backup. Worse situation would be a Terabyte or more gives you the klackety klack noise.

HDD of any capacity will get filled up. No second thoughts/questions about that.

Is it possible for you to get the blank back up drive easily ?

Is it a surity you ll get your stuff back?

Simple logical thinking tells you, if you want to have the data for keeps - DVD

If you want to delete things say within a fortnight or so and esp for things easily available - HDD

And for things to be deleted within a fortnight, you shouldnt be needing 640 GB.

I had purchased Seagate Barracuda 20gb for Rs.5200/- (fifty two hundred) in early 98-2000 year, it's still going on exuding minor crack sound, in 2004 bought 3 samsung 40gb by my friend & all 3 fails one by one till August 2010.

HTH
