My friend gave his HDD to his friend. Dont know what the other guy did, but now the 1TB WD My passport external HDD is listed under disk management but not under My computer. The platter spins properly and the LED blinks. There is no clicking sound.

I did a google search and it says that we need to format the drive! But he has some important data in it for which he has no backup.
In the disk management the partition shows size but not the drive letter or the partitions name.

Is there any way we can make the HDD up and running again with having to format it?

After a while Windows shows up a pop up asking us to format the drive.

I lost 1TB worth of movies and TV shows due to this problem, though it was an internal HDD from WD
I just cleaned my PC,put everything back and then BAMM !! I can't access it,shows in disk management but when you try to assign a new drive letter or mess with the settings "You need to format" message comes up

Honestly,I never found a solution and so finally i formatted the drive and it started working again
I really dunno what could have been done alternatively to save the data

partition table seems to be corrupt. try assigning a drive letter to it. or chkdsk. or may be try gparted in linux to see if the partitions show up as ntfs/fat.

if its ntfs, usually ntfs self heals the file allocation table from the backup. There should be some recovery softwares around.

does import disk show up if you right click on the drive?

try importing it if that option is available.

Tried activating the drive but windows gave a error message saying 'couldn't activate it due to I/O error'Couldn't assign a drive letter to it too, but it automatically got assigned and one of the two drives became active.
There was ubuntu installed in the smaller partition and the files were there. He was able to see the files once. But again we are unable to see the files in that partition.

WD asked him to install data recovery software to recover data. He installed 'Stellar Phoenix Windows data recovery'. But it says that the bigger volume (911GB) with data is corrupt/has bad sectors.
What is the best software to recover data from a HDD in RAW format? He just needs to recover some ~100GB of important data.

Has someone successfully managed to recover data from such a drive with a free s/w? what s/w do you recommend?
