weird this is one of the wonderful stories both in book and in film and i donot see it mentioned in this forum ...thats odd

did you read the book first? actually the visuals were so great ,thats what i thought anyway

Stanley Kubrick was a genius. We never would have had Star Wars if it weren't for 2001. Also watch A Clockwork Orange.

yeah, slept half through the movie..mayb this is a legend...but wouldnot be honest if i didn't say i found it VERY very slow & little dull for the times!

i haven't read the book no. and after watching the movie, i have no intention of ever doing so. maybe the visuals were great in the 1960s...

i actually was forced to watch this movie. i had a course on science fiction in college and this was required viewing for it. about 8 of us students and the professor watched it in a small lecture theatre. most of the time was spent waking up colleagues who had fallen asleep out of sheer boredom. i remember we watched the movie from about 3pm-6pm, and after that i went to my room directly fell and asleep until 10am the next morning. that ringing was stuck in my head for days.

kubrick is way, way, way overrated.

So, I was not the only one who fell asleep while watching this movie :bleh:

"Oh my God! - it's full of stars!"

Seriously as the case is always, the book is better than the movie, if Kubrick had stuck to the actual narration instead of bringing in some sort of pseudo-intellectualism [what the hell was he smoking] to the climax, this movie could have been way better. It's just the Bowman's journey is way too long and too boring.

And one more thing, this movie is not to be watched in a regular screen but to be enjoyed in the theatres [It's a pity we can't]. The sound and the visuals still hold up as good after all those years

OMG!!!!! I can't believe that ppl are bashing this flick!!!

Is it slow? Yes , it is indeed!!

But is it anything less than a masterpiece? No it's not!!!

Not only does the film has amazing Special Effect that stood the test of time but it is the MOST ACCURATE SCI-FI flick out there!!!

Also the Intensity of thriller of Man vs Computer that starts in the middle is awesome!

The only thing that bugged me a bit was the pretentious ending!!

It's a 9.5/10 for me~

^^ count me in for sleeping person list. I usually sleep after 2am, hats off "space odyssey" for putting me to sleep at 11.30pm :ashamed:

Hmm...I haven't seen 2001: Space Odyssey but I simply loved Kubrick's "The Shining" based on Stephen King's novel.

actually how much of that is arthur clarke contribution .... , the ending was very loose but i loved the book and the visuals in the movie was excellent , some of it is still in my mind , and HAL 9000 :D

Never read the book and didn't get the movie either. I liked all the other Kubrick movies though.
