Monitors 22" LCD confusion

few months back there were not many options when it came to buying a 22" LCD.

most people would recommend one of the many variants of 22" DELL's.
but now i guess after the launch of BenQ's 22" full HD E2200HD and Dell's S2209W. which is also a full HD buying a 22" budget LCD is a bit confusing.
hence i needed to clear some doubts before making a purchase.
Main use is going to be .40% general use. 30 % gaming. 30 % movies.
The monitors i am considering : (order of preference)

DELL 2208WFP Ultrasharp

BenQ E2200HD.

DELL S2209W.

i personally like the US2208WFP a lot ..but need to consider others too ..as i lot has changed lately and i just cant go by looks.
coming to the doubts i have:
1) is full HD non full HD really noticeable in a 22 " ..sitting approx. 4 ft away from the monitor.

will there be much difference between 720] and 1080p ?
from what ive heard its not all that noticeable in smaller monitors.
2) will a HD 4850 be able to handle 1920 X 1080p in most games with good \high settings.
also consider that there wont be any major hardware update for

2-3 years. ie- the monitor as well as hd 4850 need to suffice for games in the next 1/1.5 years atleast.

3) i guess for general use both resolutions wont be a problem..? right ?

ultimately it's between a US 2208 WFP having 1680 X 1050 native resolution and a BenQ E2200HD 1080p.
haveint considered the S2209W much cause i cant find any reviews..and i hate that round stand.

pour in your suggestions, personal experience with monitor etc.

1. difference in full hd and non full hd videos is not noticeable on small monitors

2. 4850 might be handle now, but will be a problem in the future

If you want more space on your desktop then get the benq monitor, game at 1680x1050 and use teh desktop at 1920x1200

I am on a 22" monitor now, and I feel like i could use a bit more space on the desktop while working... I'd say get the BenQ E2200HD 1080p but hear out what others have to say too..

Lots of comments (and links from yours truly :) ).

Conclusion: Like Tejo and SidhuPunjab said, go for the Benq 22 incher.

As for 4850 sufficing for the next 1.5 years, isn't it asking a bit too much. I wouldn't say it would even if you had a 4870X2.. 1.5 years is a long time man!! And here we are talking about resolutions like 1920X1080..

Here's my personal experience in moving from a 1680x1050 Viewsonic 22 incher to the 1920x1080 Benq T200HD (setup side by side as dual monitors in both clone as well as extended desktop modes)

  1. I really missed the extra 1-1.5 inch height of the 1680x1050 screen. The loss was very much noticeable :(
  2. I watched a high bit rate 1080p movie running on two instances of KMPlayer, one on each monitor at it's native resolution. It was quite difficult to spot any increased levels of detail on the 1920x1080 screen , and even then, it was possible only by pausing the video on both screens to realize only subtle differences in detail. So I guess it's true what they say that you need a screen size of atleast 32" or higher to appreciate the extra details that 1080p brings
  3. Most games such as World In Conflict, Company of Heroes, Call of Duty WAW, etc run just fine @ 1920x1080 on a bone stock ATI HD4850, though there is the occasional stutter which I didn't find to be bad enough to detract from the gaming experience. I have no idea about Crysis though :p
  4. The desktop looks much better (and you don't need to squint to read text either) at 1920x1080 :)

HTH answer some of the questions folks have regarding the 22" 1080p LCDs.

good comparison between 1920and 1680 :hap2:

thanks a lot for your inputs guys .
i guess E2200HD it is ..:)

by the way since the monitors 1080p native. doesnt playing demanding games(eg-crysis) @ lower resolution like 1680 X 1050 spoil the expereince ?

anyone tried it ?

You have two options:

1. You can run turn off scaling in the LCD (if it supports it) so that the screen remains in 1080p mode and the game runs within the center portion of it. The image quality will be perfect but the image size will be smaller than the screen

2. Leave scaling on in the LCD and the image is scaled up to fit the screen (with small black bars on the top/bottom and/or left/right). Image quality is not as good as the original, but aint too bad though.

Great comparision but the squinting issue can be easily taken care of by increasing the dpi. Discovered it by accident and looks quite good on my 22 incher. Vista calibri ftw :D

Yeah, not a big issue.

Yup nice info ! :)
Now does anyone have a idea of the E2200HD's pricing in Mumbai ? Is it available at lamington ?

How is the after sales service of BenQ ? Since most people have bought BenQ products for first time , noone must be having any idea.

I am in the same confusion regarding buying a 22" lcd and my options are exactly the same as mentioned the first post by Faheem i.e.

Dell 2208WFP

Dell 2209WFP

Benq E220HD

Which the better one of the above for general usage? Someone mentioned that the desktop looks better at the 1920 x 1080 resolution is that really the case?

I'll be upgrading from a 19" crt @ 1600 x 1200...so which is the better choice?

Keeping aside the VFM aspect, how are the new DELL 22" HDs in terms on Performance (Contrast Ratio, Colour Reproduction, Response Timings, HDMI, Effective Scalings for various Resolutions, etc) when compared to BenQ E2200HD??

Any Links?

well i am not really concerned about the HD thing in the lcd's...i want a lcd which will be suitable for general computing and the occasional movie....

i am more inclined towards the dell 2208 wfp since its an ultrasharp model...

also how much of a differnece will it going from 1600 x 1200 to 1680 x 1050??
