256 MB RAm : No XP Please

Hello Friends,

Last couple of weeks I have some Win98 problem. On my request to give me solution some of Memeber ask me to go for XP now and on pretty sunday morning I decide to install XP (MY BIG BIG MISTAKE).

XP is VERY VERY slow while moving between Two Folders of same Drive with 256 MB RAM it is my personal experience.

So please if you have 256 MB RAM NEVER NEVER think about XP.

And finally I return Win98 again (laut ke buddhu ghar ko aye):bleh:

eh??..it cant be that pathetic, cos i seen laptops with 256mb runnin xp decently..and many older computers in my coll with p3's n 256mb rams run xp smoothly..its just that all eyecandy is turned off :s

xp ran happily for 6 months on one of my older rigs.. amd k6 with 256 mb ram so not sure what the issue with you.. slowdowns while copying files could be cause your drive is not in DMA mode

Dude, I ran XP on a 144MB RAM PII 233 Mhz machine, and it was as fast or as slow as Win98. It just took slightly longer to boot up. I too think that DMA seems to be an issue here.

nope - i am using a Wndows XP on a PIII , 128Mb Ram its much much slower than the Win 98 i was using...

disks operating n Ultra DMA mode 2

but if i turn down the visual effects from the system properties.... things got better but not as good as Win 98

@bottle : as far as i know in XP , DMA is enabled by default..

I used to run XP on a P-III 550mhz,wth 192 MB ram :p
it ran smoothly...u have to do some tweaks...like turning off the eyecandy..& stuff...winboost can do wonders .. :)...

^^ Ejjhactly..I too used XP for 2 long years on a PIII 550 with a 128+64 stick

Just switched off all visual effets and it was as fast if not better than 98...

i ran Xp on 256mb for over a year, played games like Vice City, Age Of Mythology, Rise Of Nation on my Gf Mx 4000 on it at 1024 x 768 'almost' perfectly. It can't be that bad....

Yep. XP works *decently* on 256 MB for older apps. try running S max 7 or something and you'll see the difference. Lappy's are another matter altogether and 256 on a lappy will be decidely snappier. Surprising that u mention AOM, because the titans exp (when installed) puts a huge load on memory and even 768 used to crawl. And I've tried this both on the 2.4C and the 4800+

I used 512 MB and later 768 MB, then I suddenly moved to 2GB, currently I have 4 GB of UCCC installed and I must say that nearly everything runs smoothly. I've still got a seperate partition for the swap file.

edit : I was a late migrator to XP, december 03 to be exact. I first ran it on a P3 800MHz coppermine with 512 MB PC 133 memory. Ran like a charm, infact during the 7 months that I used that rig, IT NEVER CRASHED ONCE. Had an MX 400 card on this and used to game a lot!!! PS - XP crashes much more on the P4 and the X2. older is better sometimes. Seems like the C2D proves the point..

Man i have been running XP with 256MB RAMfor more than a yr on my current rig! its a diff story that i have more than 256 now...but XP runs absolutely fine with 256mb of ram..

Of course u cant expect to run memory heavy apps...but for the general use..256 is quite ok

Intel Pentium 4
2.4 processor
D845 GBV MOBO
Samsung 40 GB HDD
256 mb Ram

Thank You

Woah....

There's absolutely no reason why XP should run crappy on that machine...

In fact themes/visual effects should all run fine, and that 256 will throttle you down only when you have one too many windows open

Just a thought, is the HDD working in PIO mode?

You can check by going to:

My computer>Properties (Right click)>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller>Primary IDE channel>Advance settings

Tell us what you see there!

(You should see Ulra DMA Mode5 or at least UDMA Mode 2)

OT- Vandy, Still awaiting the answer to my question on the previous page! :p

Now I am using 98SE so I didn't find above settings in my Device Manager:)

you'll find it in Device manager on 98SE too, perhaps the naming convention will be different...just look around in the device manager!

Following is findings when I browse Hard Disk Controllers

1) Intel Ultra ATA Storage Conroller - 24CB
2) Primery IDE controller (dual fifo)
3) Secondery IDE controller (dual fifo)

Under Category 1 there is 4-5 options but my Hardware Provider Set it to Default.
Under Catregory 2 &3 it only shows General, Driver and Resources Tab.
