Sri Lanka -- yup nano fires have gone international

Tata nano fire incidents (UPDATED) (Tatas analysis - pg34) - Page 48 - Team-BHP

Add this to mine which burnt up in June, and you have a total of 4 nanos catching fire in 3 months.

Not a very fair mathod of calculation, but

Tata nano sales for July+aug = 4400
Add another 2000 for sept = 6400

4/6400 = 0.0625%

That may not seem like a large no. but, if say Alto's had the same combustion rate, it would result in 12-13 Altos catching fire/month (assuming 20000 Altos sale/month. Actual is a bit more)

Also, not taking nano fire's which were not reported into account

I'm rather interested in OP's nano that caught fire. So, how did it happen? I mean was there a small explosion or did u see some sparks somewhere? Were you in the car? Were you hurt physically?(Hopefully NOT!!)

Also, did you get your money back or did you get a new Nano instead? Do you use the new Nano?

You know just curious about the whole incident. :)

Almost new car. 350km run. Was just parked, we had got out of it. 5 mins later flames started coming out of the engine from the rear bumber

We caught it in time, but the interiors had mostly melted by the time we could put it out

Noone was in the car at the time (just saved by 5 mins)

Got money back, lost about 5k or so. Bought an Estillo

You know just curious about the whole incident. :)

Doubt I'll buy a Tata car again

Everybody praised tata for bringing up nano & great cars blah, blah blah & blah.Being an ex-tata customer before & after nano i just say tata is just an overhyped organization.

Someone I know was checking out to start a Tata Nano dealership..

Guess what is the dealer margin Rs.5k..

So he chucked the idea through the window cause he had to sell at least 15 cars a month to run the place and that too

in a place where there are 3 other outlets selling Nano's in a Rural area with a population of <2.5lakh people density of 200+ppl per sqkm.

Now i showed him this thread and he was like Goodness gracious i would have been a murderer :S (kiddin)

But still how could you sleep knowing that you are dealing with a vehicle who has a sad reliability rate at least lesser than the total mean average.

Good to know that you and your family is safe.

This is cheap theatrics courtesy Ratan tata to get in the international spot light.

Serve Mettalic painted shit to indian's on a silver platter at a budget and that is AWESOME!!!

I hope u guys would have heard about the nano homes project.

I don't know much about the details but check em out. I am sure they are flammable too

PS: He should add in the catalog "AUTO-IGNITION"

Hey thanks for the reply man. Good that no one of your family was hurt and luckily you were able to get almost all of your money also back. Good choice with Maruti. :)

I don't see the problem, it can happen to any car in the world. Infact there are tons of Lamborghinis that have gone up in flames, yet not much hue and cry over that :/

Infact, Tata is even offering free electrical wire replacement to anyone who isn't assured that his Nano is safe.....

Mine, and these other 3 cars are of the batches in which the electrical wire was not required as the changes were done from the factory.

The wire replacements were to solve the issue of steering column fire, not of engine fire

Nano target sales were 20k/month

At those sales levels, close to 12 would be going up in flames

A cheap car is fine.. but not at the risk of life.

Fortunately till now, none of the fires have resulted in a fatality,.

Lamborghini fire -- I really dont know about those, but if at those prices, they are as likely as a nano to catch fire, I dont see why people would buy them.

I own a NANo and this is not i am saying to being nice. But i have seen a factory come out brand new vento burned in front of my eye.And next day in no paper i found this news even that being happened in Mumbai.

Anyways as said thank god none of them had any life fatalities.

Regarding someone saying here that tata being overhyped and NANO just being show off.I just want to say at-least admire the person who risked his company brand value when entering in this market.

See where bajaj nissan have gone backtracking from their words after seeing tata finding it hard to sell those cars as people still thinks here cars gives status rather than transportation and hit their pocket hard with their product.

The company have products right from buses to the most expensive cars on earth and still they promoting a two lakh vehicle. Its not that they want it to go right and prove people they can do anything just like apple and make it work.

I read somewhere that NANO should surely not FLOP as if does all car makers will shy away from thinking about basic necessity people need and will keep giving expensive stuff one after another hitting ones pocket hard.

Even if NANO tomorrow gets converted into taxi or auto i can still say its much better to travel in it rather than present autos and old taxis in mumbai seeing the comfort zone with 4 people and space.

The thing is that about 1-2 out of a lakh Maruti's catch fire

In terms of Seating comfort and even AC, I found the nano way better than an Alto

However, the fact that it can just catch fire while standing idle is quite risky

Anyone would prefer to pay 20-30k extra if it means avoiding the car catching fire.

What would have happened, if any of these fires had happened in a packed mall parking, or if the fire had reached the fuel tank..

Nothing much, worst case an explosion, some ppl will die, some will be injured, a committee may be convened, Tata will offer compensation, there will be some hue and cry, and we will forget the incident in the next few months.

The only main difference will be that the media coverage will be less. Oh, and while Tata will pay compensation here, we cannot ask the other country to do the same. After all, they will deny it!

But seriously, lets hope Tata fixes the problems with the cars ASAP..........

Also the govt should wake up to the problems faced by us mere mortal citizens. I know its too much to ask, but after all, even i can day dream.........

Oh and forgot the main thing to write.....

Headlines in the next day news paper: Nano on fire, once again.

Nano sales figures seem to suggest that people arent really forgetting about it this time.

A nano is better in many areas than an Alto. still Alto sales are almost 20 x nano sales

Since a nano costs half, it should have killed off the Alto by now, but the nano is only doing less than 5k units/month

Reason for that is being tag as the cheap car.

People doesn't want to associate with stuffs which looks cheap and more into having their pride high .There are people who own wagon-R and says they find it comfortable to sit in back seat of NANO because of too much leg space. Also there are people like me who wants car only to travel from one place to another without much traveling baggage space.Hence its perfect for me.There are many people who took lift in my car and in front of my face says atleast you should have got an ALTO as NANO will dent my pocket image and will make them look fools in it.But i dont care as i know what i need and i get.

But it all goes into toss when someone scribes why did you got this cheap s#$t.Also a study recently proved that even a first time buyer is preferring ford figo.Hence that was the final nail for bajaj nissan to shy away with the idea of coming with a competitor to Nano.

I wont say its the best car but certainly at the price which you get is an auto or an old cab.And it certainly offers 50% more comfort and feature than both this old species.

Again i repeat you must admire the concept for which he(ratan tata) went ahead with it.

Think about the people who travel on a bike with their better half and two kids in a rainy day.At least he provided some relief to those family and security.

Regarding the fire issue i feel so far it have prove to be much safer than bike accidents and those 3-4 cases shouldnt be overhyped. As i said it happens with every company product .Its just that 1 car out of 50000 is enough to dent the company's image when they did think good for mankind.

Well, going up from a bike to a nano -- yes, you do get enhanced safety

I'm talking more from the perspective of someone who can afford buying a WagonR/Figo level car, or those buying nano as a 2nd/3rd car, they will avoid nano.

If Tata sorts out these issues, they can take this market as will

Its not 1 out of 50k, its more like 4 out of 6k

First look: In congested Mumbai, Nano comes to cops rescue

In order to do patrolling in small lanes and chasing criminals, the Mumbai Police might procure Tata Nano car. The police are doing a trial of the vehicle and are looking to the possibility of making it a part of the city police.

According to the police sources, company officials had visited the office of Mumbai Police Commissioner on Monday and had proposed them usage of Nano car, after which the police had kept one car within the commissioner office to examine its efficiency.

“We use motorcycles to do patrolling in narrow lanes in the city. However, Nano car has more than one advantage, while it takes less parking space as compared to other Sedan cars, it can replace bikes as far as doing night patrolling is concerned and weapons can also be stored in the duct of the car,” said a senior police officers,

He added that, the police have kept one Nano car within the city police headquarters for a day and are still examining whether it can be used by the force. “Nothing has been finalised yet on the procurement of Nano car by the police,” said the officer.

See what single instance does.

Thats the ultimate problem with the car.

If tomorrow a expensive sedan burns everyone will take it as a single instance.

Though i too doesn't agree with using it as patrolling car right now unless they get their rear end opening fixed.Well a frnd from autocar said next year begining car coming with power steering and open back.

Nano is not aimed at people who can afford a Wagon R. It is aimed at totally different people .

The idea and concept is good . Lets hope Tata can improve on it .
